Radial Urethrotomy and Intralesional Mitomycin C for the Management of Recurrent Bladder Neck Contractures

Abstract: Management of recurrent bladder neck contractures with radial urethrotomy combined with intralesional mitomycin C resulted in bladder neck patency in 72% of the patients after 1 procedure and in 89% after 2 procedures. Although early results are promising, longer followup and randomized, prospective studies are required to validate these findings.

“…54 Incision + Mitomycin C. MMC has a long history of use in various fields due to its antiproliferative properties that have been shown to inhibit fibroblasts and collagen deposition, thereby reducing subsequent scar formation. 55 Its use in the treatment of VUAS was first described by Vanni et al in 2011. 56 The TURNS Study Group subsequently reported on 66 patients with recalcitrant VUAS.…”

“…Botulinum toxin is one such agent that has been used in a small number of patients in an effort to prevent scars from forming. 4 There has also been a report of successful outcomes in a retrospective review of 18 cases in which recurrent bladder neck contractures were managed with urethrotomy and intralesional injection of mitomycin C. 5 Further study is needed for these interventions.…”
