Quantifying coal power plant responses to tighter SO 2 emissions standards in China

Abstract: SignificanceWe observe large reductions in the concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from coal power plants in China following the implementation of a tougher national air emissions standard using a high-frequency plant-level data source. We find a corresponding decline in SO2 measures in satellite observations. However, correspondence between these two measures is lower in areas that faced a sharper increase in standard stringency.
