Quantifying and Minimizing Uncertainty of Climate Forcing by Anthropogenic Aerosols

Abstract: Anthropogenic aerosols are composed of a variety of aerosol types and components including water-soluble inorganic species (e.g., sulfate, nitrate, ammonium), condensed organic species, elemental or black carbon, and mineral dust. Previous estimates of the clear sky forcing by anthropogenic sulfate aerosols and by organic biomass-burning aerosols indicate that this forcing is of sufficient magnitude to mask the effects of anthropogenic greenhouse gases over large regions. Here, the uncertainty in the forcing b… Show more

“…The uncertainty associated with evaporation of semi-volatile compounds was not included in this analysis because it is composition and temperature specific. The water uptake property of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 was used in the uncertainty analysis because of the large contribution of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 to the aerosol mass loading (Penner et al 1994). Uncertainties of ±1% RH for RH between 0 and 85% and ±2% RH for RH above 85% were used, giving the following uncertainties in the aerosol extinction coefficient:…”

“…These aerosol-induced climate perturbations can happen directly, by increased scattering and absorption of solar radiation by the aerosol particles, and indirectly, by altering cloud microphysical and radiative properties. Current estimates of the magnitude of the direct aerosol radiative forcing (global effect and annual average) range from--0.3 to -1.0 W m -2, with an estimated uncertainty of roughly a factor of 2 [Penner et al, 1994]. Indirect forcing effects are believed to be at least as large but are even less well characterized [IPCC, 1996].…”

“…Statistical uncertainty has also been identified [138,139], but structural (or systematic) uncertainty, which here refers to the underlying physics and understanding of model behaviour, is less well understood. In large-scale mechanistic models of climate change, the understanding and improvement of climate models through better data collection [140] and reduced spatial and temporal error [141,142], together with an analysis of model sensitivities through sampling algorithms, are emerging areas of interest. Some early work to connect mechanistic models with statistical models and combine information about uncertainty (e.g.…”
