Quality of sleep and anxiety are related to circadian preference in university students

Abstract: Chronotype is a circadian phenotype expressed in the preference of individuals to perform their activities and sleep in specific phases along the day. The objective of the study was to identify anxiety levels, quality of sleep and different chronotypes of university students and investigate their possible relationships. This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, in which 103 undergraduate students answered the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory … Show more

“…Silva and colleagues (2020) stated that E-type university students are typically characterized by poor sleep quality and higher anxiety traits compared to their M-types colleagues. Possible explanations could be academic demand in addition to the circadian desynchronization due to university schedules [ 169 ], and similar conclusions were previously reported in other studies [ 170 , 171 ]. In the same way, E-types workers forced to be active in early hours report poor sleep quality [ 172 ].…”

“…A lack of synchronization with cultural standards related to activity timing can lead to worse academic achievement, higher anxiety, cardiometabolic risk, and complicated relationships with family members and school friends [ 26 , 169 , 179 , 185 , 186 , 187 , 188 ]. In this regard, the misalignment associated with eveningness can be partly considered a biological vulnerability factor concerning physical and cognitive performance as well as the development of psychological problems [ 20 ].…”

“…The researchers used the Insomnia ISI and GAD-7 to measure both of these variables. The ISI score was interpreted as absence of insomnia (0-7), subthreshold insomnia (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14), moderate insomnia (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21), and severe insomnia (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28); with excellent reliability and validity among university student 12 . GAD-7 score was categorized into minimal (0-4), mild (5-9), moderate (10)(11)(12)(13)(14), and severe (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21).…”

“…5 The occurrence of anxiety has been associated with insomnia in several studies. 6,7,8 Both are problems which are often found in college students and young adults in general. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can be characterized by difficulty starting or maintaining sleep or waking up too early and unable to return…”

“…Исследование недельной активности у студентов выявило частую проблему вечернего типа: меньшее количество и худшее качество сна в будние дни по сравнению с утренним типом и попытки наверстать недостаток сна в выходные [24]. Другое исследование с участием студентов дополнило эту связь: у испытуемых с поздним хронотипом было не только худшее качество сна, но и повышенная тревожность по сравнению с ранним типом [25]. Вечерний хронотип является фактором, повышающим риск появления жалоб на бессонницу у студентов [26].…”
