The concept of quality of life (QOL) in adolescents with epilepsy is different from that of adolescents with other chronic diseases. For epileptic adolescents, QOL is more closely related to depression, anxiety and locus of control. Innovations in surgical treatment have done much to improve these patients' subjective quantification of their QOL.There are unique effects of neuropsychological influences on their self-awareness and self-assessment of QOL. These issues are reviewed together with the presentation and description of several instruments in current use for self-assessment of QOL in this population.

Public health and school nurses can apply our findings to educate school teachers and parents about epilepsy and encourage activities that allow children with and without epilepsy to interact, thus improving peer relationships and reducing stigmatisation. Children with and without epilepsy would also benefit from an age-appropriate education manual that includes causes of epilepsy, treatment, dealing with seizures and psychological and social adaptation.
