Quality Evaluation and Prediction of Citrullus lanatus by1H NMR-Based Metabolomics and Multivariate Analysis

Abstract: (1)H NMR spectrometry in combination with multivariate analysis was considered to provide greater information on quality assessment over an ordinary sensory testing method due to its high reliability and high accuracy. The sensory quality evaluation of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) was carried out by means of (1)H NMR-based metabolomics. Multivariate analyses by partial least-squares projections to latent structures-discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) and PLS-regression offered extensive… Show more

“…A global analysis on the metabolome profile in a biological system can provide metabolic responses induced by environmental stressors (Fasulo et al, 2012;Kwon et al, 2012;Cappello et al, 2013aCappello et al, , 2013b. And it has been also widely applied in multiple areas such as food quality (Tarachiwin et al, 2008), ecotoxicology (Jones et al, 2008) and plant sciences (Kim et al, 2010). Cappello et al (2013aCappello et al ( , 2013b identified the metabolic responses Hg and PAHs in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis caged in anthropogenic-impacted sites along the Augusta coastline (Sicily, Italy) and confirmed these mussels had suffered from adverse environmental condition.…”

“…Therefore, metabolomics can detect differences in the metabolome profile in response to environmental stressors (Cappello et al, 2013;Fasulo et al, 2012;Kwon et al, 2012). It has also been widely applied in multiple areas such as food quality (Tarachiwin et al, 2008), ecotoxicology (Jones et al, 2008) and plant sciences (Kim et al, 2010). Cappello et al (2013) successfully identified metabolic responses to environmental pollution, primarily from exposure to Hg and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis caged in anthropogenic-impacted and reference sites along the Augusta coastline (Sicily, Italy).…”

“…Metabolic fingerprinting, one of the metabolomics approaches, aims to rapidly classify samples according to their origin or their biological relevance without sufficient analytical resolution [4]. Main proposes of using metabolic fingerprinting of plants includes screening of mutant collections [5], or quality control and quality assessment of food and crop products [6,7], and traditional medicines [8]. Since, fingerprinting involves a large numbers of measurements, analytical techniques with high-throughput for general screening are required.…”
