The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Khella Baladi on the amelioration of kidney dysfunction in hyperoxaluric rats. Thirty-six adult male albino rats were divided into six groups, six rats for each. One of them was kept as a (-ve) control group, while the other five groups were treated with ethylene glycol 0.75% and ammonium chloride 1% for a week via the drinking water to induce hyperoxaluria. Khella Baladi was added to five groups in different quantities (1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6%), respectively. The treatment lasted for 28 days. From the obtained results it was showed that treatment with Khella Baladi in different quantities (1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6%), respectively for 28 days caused a significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase in weight gain%, feed intake, feed efficiency ratio, HDLc, total protein, albumin, globulin, and serum (Na & K), but with significant (P ≤ 0.05) decrease in relative organs weights, liver functions, kidney functions, urine (Na &K), serum glucose, serum bilirubin fractions, TC, TG, LDL, and VLDL. The best treatment was for Khella Baladi 6%. Therefore, it can be concluded that Khella Baladi could minimize the hyperoxaluric effect of (NH4Cl+EG) and potent a diuretic effect.

Ammi visnaga L. (Visnaga daucoides Gaertn., Family Apiaceae), also known as Khella Baldi or toothpick weed, is an annual or biennial herb indigenous to the Mediterranean region of North Africa, Asia, and Europe. The plant is known to have been used in traditional medicine a long time ago. Nowadays, it is used in modern medicine to treat many aliments such as renal colic and coronary insufficiency, and is used as an antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial, with a larvicidal effect on mosquito larvae. Peer-reviewed studies show that these pharmacological activities are due its valuable chemical constituents that include mainly essential oil, polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids, as well as γ-pyrones, represented mainly by khellin and visnagin. Its essential oil is reported to have antiviral, antibacterial, and larvicidal effects, while its flavonoid content is responsible for its antioxidant activity. Its γ-pyrone content has a powerful effect on facilitating the passage of kidney stones and relieving renal colic, in addition to having a relaxant effect on smooth muscle including that of the coronary arteries. The current review represents the progress in research on A. visnaga in terms of either its chemistry or biological activities. This review represents scientific support material for the use of the plant by the pharmaceutical industry.

Objective: The present study was aimed at phytochemical screening, quantification, and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis of hexane, chloroform and ethanol leaf extracts of Calamus rotang.Methods: Leaf extracts were prepared according to the polarity of the solvents, i.e., hexane, chloroform, and ethanol. Preliminary phytochemical screening involved the qualitative methods to detect the presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, etc. Quantitative estimation of alkaloids using boldine as standard, phenols using gallic acid as standard, and flavonoids using quercetin as standard were done. HPTLC analysis was done with all three extracts along with quercetin and rutin standards using mobile phase for flavonoids, i.e., 90:10 ratio of chloroform and methanol solvents.Results: Phytochemical screening showed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, etc. Hence, quantification was done for these phytochemicals. Alkaloids were present significantly more in hexane leaf extract, i.e., 2.54±0.216mg boldine equivalents/g. Phenols were present significantly more in ethanolic leaf extract, i.e., 49.04±0.364 mg gallic acid equivalents)/g. Flavonoids were present in significant amount in ethanolic leaf extract, i.e., 458.85±5.74 mg quercetin equivalents/g. HPTLC analysis of hexane, chloroform, and ethanolic extracts showed the presence of flavonoids such as quercetin, rutin, and some unknown flavonoid compounds.Conclusion: Ethanolic leaf extract showed a high amount of phenols and flavonoids. Hence, the extract can be further exploited further for in vitro and in vivo research work.
