Objetivos: apreender a percepção dos profissionais de enfermagem acerca do significado de ser idoso e identificar facilidades e dificuldades enfrentadas na assistência prestada ao idoso hospitalizado. Método: pesquisa qualitativa, com 34 profissionais de enfermagem, atuantes em enfermaria de clínica médica, de hospital público do interior paulista. Os dados foram coletados através de entrevista semiestruturada, e submetidos à técnica de análise de conteúdo. Resultados: a percepção de idoso foi atrelada à idade, aparência física, grau de dependência, carência e insegurança. As facilidades relacionaram-se à aceitação da doença, ao tratamento, à passividade e confiança na equipe. Dependência, hábitos, relacionamento com os acompanhantes, convivência com o abandono e tempo insuficiente para o cuidado foram considerados fatores limitantes para o cuidado. Conclusão: os participantes do estudo têm percepção estereotipada do idoso; dificuldades e facilidades no cuidado estão atreladas ao processo de envelhecimento, adoecimento e institucionalização.ABSTRACTObjectives: to apprehend the perception of nursing professionals about the meaning of being elderly and to identify the facilities and difficulties faced in caring for hospitalized elderly patients. Results: the perception of the elderly was related to age, physical appearance, degree of dependence, lack of affection and insecurity. Facilities were related to disease acceptance, treatment, passivity and trustiness in the team. Dependence, habits, relationship with the companions, coexistence with the abandonment and insufficient time for the care were considered limiting factors for the care. Conclusion: the study participants have stereotyped perception of the elderly; difficulties and facilities in care are associated to the aging process, illness and institutionalization. RESUMENObjetivos: aprehender la percepción de los profesionales de enfermería sobre el significado de ser anciano y identificar las facilidades y las dificultades que se enfrentan en el cuidado a los pacientes ancianos hospitalizados. Método: investigación cualitativa, con 34 profesionales de enfermería, trabajando en servicio de clínica médica, en un hospital público en São Paulo, Brasil. Los datos se recolectaron a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y se sometieron al análisis de contenido. Resultados: la percepción de los profesionales sobre ancianos se relacionó con la edad, la apariencia física, el grado de dependencia, la falta de afecto y la inseguridad. Las facilidades se relacionaron con la aceptación de la enfermedad, el tratamiento, la pasividad y la confianza en el equipo. La dependencia, los hábitos, la relación con los compañeros, la convivencia con el abandono y el tiempo insuficiente para la atención fueron considerados factores limitantes para el cuidado. Conclusión: los participantes del estudio tienen percepción estereotipada de los ancianos; las dificultades y las facilidades en el cuidado están asociadas al proceso de envejecimiento, a la enfermedad y a la institucionalización. Objective: to understand which are the experiences of community health agents in the care of patients with chronic diseases. Methods: qualitative research carried out through the interview of 20 community health agents. Data were analyzed following the steps of content analysis. Results: the care for the elderly has limitations due to their low educational level, resistance to adhere to drug therapy and low frequency of visits to health facilities. Another reason is the aging process in itself that may compromise the ability of self-care and the development of daily activities. Conclusion: difficulties of community health agents were identified in the care of elderly people with chronic diseases due to low adherence to treatment and to the health service. Objetivo: compreender como se dão as vivências de agentes comunitários de saúde na atenção a idosos acometidos por doenças crônicas. Métodos: pesquisa qualitativa, com 20 agentes comunitários de saúde entrevistados. Dados analisados seguindo os passos da análise de conteúdo. Resultados: a atenção aos idosos tem limitações em função da reduzida escolaridade destes, a resistência em aderir à terapia medicamentosa e a pouca frequência às unidades de saúde. Também, ao próprio processo de envelhecimento, que pode comprometer o cuidado de si e a realização de atividades diárias. Conclusão: identificaram-se dificuldades dos agentes comunitários de saúde na atenção a idosos com doenças crônicas, uma vez que há pouca adesão destes ao tratamento e ao serviço de saúde.

Translation and content validation of the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile for Brazil

Objective: to describe the process of content adaptation and validation of the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile (GIAP) for nurses working in the health care for older adults in Brazilian hospitals. Method: methodological study conducted in five stages: initial translation, synthesis of initial translation, back translation, evaluation by committee of judges, and pre-test for cultural adaptation of the instrument. Results: the instrument evaluation had good agreement between the judges, with general content validity of 0.94. The items of the translated version evaluated as unsatisfactory by the judges were reformulated from the professionals’ considerations in each group. Thirty-one subjects participated in the study. They considered the instrument easy-to-understand and suggested minor adjustments in some items. Conclusion: the content of the Brazilian version of the GIAP is considered adapted and validated, with potential use in hospital institutions. The next stage will be to submit the instrument to the evaluation process of its psychometric properties for use in Brazilian populations.
