This paper aimed to compare the reports of patients and caregivers about how they perceive quality of life (QoL) in general and each of its dimensions in elderly with Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The participants were elderly diagnosed with AD (n=53) attended by the Exceptional Medication Program in a city in the interior of Sao Paulo; and their respective family caregivers. The QoL measures were obtained through the Quality of Life Assessment Scale on Alzheimer's Disease. The results showed statistically significant differences in the "memory" (p<0.05) and "you in general" (p<0.005) dimensions. Regarding the final score, the average in the patient's version was 29.32 points (sd=6.27), against 28.33 points (sd=5.58) in the family version, p>0.100. Although the relative and patient reports were not identical, the results pointed to a high level of consistency among information.Descriptors: Quality of Life; Alzheimer Disease; Dementia; Caregivers; Aged. Las medidas de CV fueron obtenidas por medio de la Escala de Evaluación de Calidad de Vida en la Enfermedad de Alzheimer. Los resultados mostraron que apenas las dimensiones "memoria" (p<0,05) y "usted en general" (p<0,005) presentaron disparidades estadísticamente significativas. En cuanto al puntaje final, el promedio en la versión del paciente fue de 29,32 puntos (de=6,27) y en la versión del familiar fue de 28,33 puntos (de=5,58), p>0,100. A pesar de que los relatos del familiar y del paciente no son idénticos, los resultados apuntaron una elevada consistencia entre las informaciones.

Aims:The aims of this study are to (1) explore the determinants of quality of life (QoL) in nursing home residents with young-onset dementia (YOD), (2) investigate whether there are differences between dementia subtypes (Alzheimer dementia, vascular/mixed dementia, frontotemporal dementia, other) regarding these determinants, and (3) compare QoL profiles of YOD nursing home residents across dementia subtypes. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 207 nursing home residents. Multilevel modeling was used to determine the relationships between QoL and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), dementia severity, psychotropic drug use (PDU), dementia subtype, age, and gender. Additional multilevel models were used to compare aspects of QoL between dementia subtypes. Results: Residents' QoL was negatively associated with advanced dementia, PDU, and NPS. In general, the relationships between the determinants and QoL were similar across the dementia subtypes. Aspects of QoL differed by dementia subtype. Residents with frontotemporal dementia showed less negative emotions, accepted more help and experienced better quality of relationships with professional caregivers, had a more positive self-image, felt more comfortable in the nursing home environment, and experienced lower quality of social relationships. Conclusions: Considering the high rates of NPS and PDU in YOD residents and their negative associations with QoL, we recommend emphasizing services to manage and reduce NPS and PDU in nursing home residents with YOD. Furthermore, our findings suggest accounting for differences in aspects of QoL by dementia subtype to address specific needs and thereby improve QoL.

Background: The preservation and promotion of the quality of life (QoL) is a central objective in the provision of nursing care for people with dementia (PwD). Long-term care facilities face the major challenge to promote the QoL of the ever-growing group of PwD by providing adequate nursing care. Objective: The aim of the study was to outline the QoL of residents with dementia in Austrian nursing homes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out. The data were collected through the Quality of Life in Dementia Questionnaire (QUALIDEM) and the Functional Assessment Staging Test (FAST). Results: 147 people with mild to moderately severe dementia and 80 people with severe dementia residing in 23 nursing homes were included in the study. In people with mild to severe dementia, the highest scores were observed in the QUALIDEM-subscales positive affect and feeling at home, indicating a high QoL in these areas. The lowest scores with respect to the QoL were found in the categories restless tense behavior and having something to do. People with a very severe dementia had the lowest scores in the QUALIDEM-subscales social relations, restless tense behavior and having something to do, indicating a low QoL in these areas. The categories with the highest scores were positive self-image and feeling at home. Conclusion: The results of the study provide first data and clues for possible developments or necessary changes in the care of PwD in long-term care facilities in Tyrol/Austria.
