In the present work, deposition of poly(sebacic anhydride) PSBA loaded by amoxicillin, cefazolin, or vancomycin on a previously anodized Ti‐15Mo surface is presented. PSBA loaded by the drug was deposited so as not to lose the functionality of the porous oxide layer microstructure. The morphology was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, surface roughness, and wettability. The drug concentration was evaluated using high‐performance liquid chromatography. It was determined that the drugs were loaded into coatings in the range of 35.2–122.87 μg/cm2 of Ti sample. The drugs released more than 16% after 0.5 hr of the hybrid coating immersion in artificial saliva. After 3 days, the PSBA coatings were degraded by 51.3 mol %, and after 7 days by 77.8 mol %, which makes it possible to load the material by different, biologically active substances. An antimicrobial investigation of Staphylococcus aureus (DSM 24167) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (ATCC 700296) confirmed the activity of the hybrid layers against the pathogens. Hybrid layer with vancomycin best inhibits the adhesion of the bacteria, whereas coatings with amoxicillin and cefazolin showed a much better bactericidal activity. In this article, the difference in the obtained results is discussed, as well as the possibility of the application of this functional material in biomedicine.

Alginic Acid Polymer-Hydroxyapatite Composites for Bone Tissue Engineering

Natural bone is a composite organic-inorganic material, containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) as an inorganic phase. In this review, applications of natural alginic acid (ALGH) polymer for the fabrication of composites containing HAP are described. ALGH is used as a biocompatible structure directing, capping and dispersing agent for the synthesis of HAP. Many advanced techniques for the fabrication of ALGH-HAP composites are attributed to the ability of ALGH to promote biomineralization. Gel-forming and film-forming properties of ALGH are key factors for the development of colloidal manufacturing techniques. Electrochemical fabrication techniques are based on strong ALGH adsorption on HAP, pH-dependent charge and solubility of ALGH. Functional properties of advanced composite ALGH-HAP films and coatings, scaffolds, biocements, gels and beads are described. The composites are loaded with other functional materials, such as antimicrobial agents, drugs, proteins and enzymes. Moreover, the composites provided a platform for their loading with cells for the fabrication of composites with enhanced properties for various biomedical applications. This review summarizes manufacturing strategies, mechanisms and outlines future trends in the development of functional biocomposites.

Very Strong, Super‐Tough, Antibacterial, and Biodegradable Polymeric Materials with Excellent UV‐Blocking Performance

In this work, inspired by the dynamic sacrificial hydrogen bonds in biological materials, a very strong, super-tough, antibacterial, and cost-effective biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite material was developed by incorporating the nanoscale antibacterial agent TA@LSÀ Ag. TA@LSÀ Ag was prepared from the green biomass tannic acid (TA) and sodium lignosulfonate (LS), and was facilely incorporated into the PVA matrix with a homogeneously interspersed nanoparticle size of about 20 nm. The PVA nanocomposite film with 2 wt % addition of TA@LSÀ Ag achieved the highest specific toughness of 262 J g À 1 among the PVA-based films to date, which is far higher than that of natural spider silk (150-190 J g À 1), as well as a very high tensile strength of 131.6 MPa. The excellent tensile strength and superior toughness were attributed to synergy of the nanophase separation structure and the intense hydrogen-bonding interactions between the nanoparticles and PVA matrix. The PVA/TA@LSÀ Ag nanocomposite films exhibited good antibacterial properties, despite the extremely low silver content (0.032-0.32 wt %). TA@LSÀ Ag also endowed the PVA films with excellent antioxidant and UV-shielding performance. As the biomass-derived LS and TA and the PVA matrix are all biodegradable, this work offers a facile strategy for preparing high-performance antibacterial and biodegradable polymeric materials.
