“…The general positive effects of amino acid foliar spray applications could be attributed to enhanced pollen tube ovule penetration and delayed ovule senescence which increases fruit set and yield. Similar findings were reported on pear (21,22). Data in Figure 2 indicated that the fruit firmness of "Golden delicious" was significantly affected by foliar spraying of 2 mg L -1 calcium chelate as compared with control and "Granny smith" apples.…”

“…The interaction between ethylene and PAs during Hibiscus flower senescence was observed by Chae et al (1995) where activities of ACC synthase and ACC oxidase were fairly high during preclimacteric stage in which ethylene production was very low. No positive relation between endogenous PAs levels and ethylene levels were noticed during post-bloom period in Pyrus communis flowers (Crisosto et al 1992) which is also observed in present case. It is of interest to know that petal senescence is much faster in R. damascena than R. bourboniana and exogenous PAs were more effective in retarding senescence in the former than the latter species (Sood and Nagar 2003).…”

“…Polyamines have been known to delay senescence in some systems, simulating the effects of cytokinins, but have also been implicated in the metabolic pathway of ethylene, inhibiting its production (Crisosto et al, 1992). However, putrescine's role in delaying ES senescence in 'Comice' pear was not tied to the inhibition of ethylene production (Crisosto et al, 1992).…”

“…Similarly, in Pyrus L. spp., the application at bloom of a polyamine, putrescine, delayed ovule senescence and extended EPP in 'Comice' pear (Crisosto et al, 1992).
