Oral and written skills are increasingly considered to be essential tools in the job market for the success of any worker, and are thus called soft skills. Nevertheless, most graduates who enter the labor market experience difficulties in the apprehension of communication, not only with regard to writing, but also in oral communication. These difficulties are also noticeable in the classroom, for instance when students need to participate by expressing their doubts when they have to present research work within the curricular units they attend, or when they have to write their answers in assessment tests. In this paper, we explore the communication skills of students from different graduate degrees (n = 345) in order to understand how they prepare for oral and written communication. We made use of the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA), validated by McCroskey, Beatty, Kearney, and Plax (1985), in order to understand students’ oral communication apprehension. To understand the levels of written communication apprehension, we applied the Daly–Miller Writing Apprehension Test (DMWA). We thus analyzed the communicational skills and the communication apprehension of students from social and human sciences courses in order to understand how they prepare for oral and writing communication, and whether there were differences between genders and between different graduate courses regarding communication apprehension. The main results of this research confirm that the students experienced difficulties with and fear of communication, especially for oral communication. Furthermore, the results indicate that female students showed more significant levels of anxiety with regard to oral and written communication than male students. This exploratory study also makes it possible to distinguish areas of communication apprehension according to the different genders, and even with regard to the degree courses students belonged to.

Self-confidence Not everyone has good self-confidence. Therefore, it needs to be encouraged in several ways: through public speaking combined with personal branding. The purpose of this service was to develop public speaking and personal branding skills for student organization managers at SMA Dharma Wanita Surabaya through the PIKAT scheme. The training is divided into two; offline and online. The training program is carried out by carrying out counseling on public speaking and personal branding based on theories in communication. The second activity is to train public speaking and personal branding where the participants can practice their public speaking skills. Monitoring after mentoring and training activities is still carried out. At the end of the program, there are four outputs/recommendations, training modules, activity news, and community service journals. It can be concluded that this activity encourages the development of public speaking and personal branding skills for student organization managers at SMA Dharma Wanita Surabaya.

This study aims to improve the soft skills of students' aspects of cooperation and social communication by implementing the GGE learning model. The problem is focused on efforts to improve cooperation and social communication skills. Pre-cycle identification of obtaining results related to the aspect of cooperation still needs to be improved because it is at the level of moderate, sufficient and insufficient interpretation of each indicator. The main indicators of the social communication aspect are at the level of adequate interpretation. The research data were collected using a checklist and observation sheets by observing the changes that occurred in students during two cycles. This study concludes that the GGE model can improve soft skills in the aspects of cooperation and social communication. Aspects of cooperation, indicators of respect for opinions and light-heartedness increased from moderate and moderate levels in pre-cycle to high levels in cycle 2, responsibility at moderate level in pre-cycle increased to very high level in cycle 2, participatory increased from moderate level to very high level in cycle 2 Aspects of social communication also experienced an increase in indicators of confidence, language style, speech style, and body gestures from a moderate level in the pre-cycle to a high level in cycle 2. The indicators of concept mastery and calmness were at a moderate level in the pre-cycle, increasing to a very high level in the pre-cycle. cycle 2.
