Psychometric properties of the Basic Empathy Scale in Polish children and adolescents

Abstract: The Basic Empathy Scale is widely used to measure cognitive and affective empathy in different age groups. Although empathy is studied throughout the world, research on this important psychological construct in Eastern European populations needs to be increased. In order to accomplish this, validated instruments to measure empathy are needed in this geographic area. This study was conducted to analyze the psychometric properties of the Basic Empathy Scale in Poland. The sample included 1052 children and adoles… Show more

“…Of the total of 21 articles, 13 (61.9%) studied the equivalence. In nine cases [ 3 , 15 , 17 , 18 , 25 , 26 , 66 , 79 , 82 ], a comparison between the original version and the reduced version that they set out within their sample was made. In three cases [ 75 , 77 , 83 ], their analysis of the instrument was compared with analyses carried out previously.…”

“…For those articles in which there was no indication, an attempt to extract the implicit information regarding the type of evidence was made. We observed one article (4.76%) that measures discriminant evidence [ 25 ], and ten (47.62%) that measure convergent evidence [ 15 , 17 , 18 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 ]. Seven articles (33.33%) measure both of them [ 3 , 22 , 58 , 71 , 72 , 75 , 84 ].…”

“…The shortened versions comprise fewer but otherwise identical items that were considered adequate for the respective target groups. Despite the availability of an adolescent version of the scale, most validation studies with adolescents used the adult MDS-32 version (Sijtsema et al, 2019; Zych et al, 2020), and several used the child MDS-14 version (Campaert et al, 2017; Paciello et al, 2020). The validation of the adolescent MDS-24 version has been less explored (Romera, Ortega-Ruiz, Runions, & Falla, 2021).…”

“…Gender normative socialisation and differences in parenting styles also contribute to gender differences in empathic development (O'Neill, 2020). Notably, this varies culturally, whereby collectivist cultures find males to be more empathic (Lai et al, 2015) as compared to individualist cultures wherein females report higher empathy scores (Jolliffe & Farrington, 2006a;Llorca-Mestre et al, 2017;Zych et al, 2020). Similarly to attachment, the influence of parental behaviour has lasting effects on empathy later in life.…”
