Basic Empathy Scale: A Systematic Review and Reliability Generalization Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The Basic Empathy Scale (BES) has been internationally used to measure empathy. A systematic review including 74 articles that implement the instrument since its development in 2006 was carried out. Moreover, an evidence validity analysis and a reliability generalization meta-analysis were performed to examine if the scale presented the appropriate values to justify its application. Results from the systematic review showed that the use of the BES is increasing, although the research areas in which it is being… Show more

“…Eventually, CFA began to be employed, a technique that overcame some of these obstacles [47] but had other drawbacks, such as that the strict requirement of zero crossloadings often does not t the data well and that misspeci cation of zero loadings tends to give distorted factors [48]. Recently, exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) has been proposed, a technique widely recommended both conceptually and empirically to assess the internal structure of psychological tools [49] since it overcomes the limitations that EFA and CFA have in estimating their parameters [47,48].…”

“…The empathy measure was adapted and validated in French (Carré et al, 2013). The scale includes three dimensions: emotional contagion (6 items, e.g., ‘I get caught up in other people’s feeling easily’, α = .73), cognitive empathy (8 items, e.g., ‘I can understand my friend’s happiness when she/he does well at something’, α = .75), and emotional disconnection (6 reverse-coded items, e.g., ‘I am not usually aware of my friend’s feelings’, α = .72) and shows good psychometric properties in other adolescents’ populations (see Cabedo Peris et al, 2022).…”
