Psychological distress in an incarcerated juvenile population

Abstract: Significant sex differences were found for both the overall BSRS-5, as well as for each individual item of the BSRS-5. Treatment programs and interventions should be carefully tailored to address the mental health needs of juvenile inmates in a sex-specific manner using a multifaceted approach.

“…When gender was added into the model, it was found that males were more likely to be exposed to violence, whereas females reported greater parental monitoring and psychological distress than males. While these findings affirm what previous research has found around outcomes for females (Keenan et al, 2010a;Lyu et al, 2015;Teplin et al, 2002) what is interesting is that although males were exposed to higher levels of violence, they had lower levels of reported psychological distress than females. The reduced likelihood of exposure to violence among females may be related to results that showed females tend to report greater levels of parental monitoring than males.…”

“…Exposure to violence is more likely to lead to anxiety and depression in females than males (J. D. Foster et al, 2004). Furthermore, incarcerated female juvenile offenders were found to be more likely to report psychological distress and psychiatric disorders (Lyu et al, 2015;Teplin et al, 2002). Of particular concern, girls are more likely to have early onset of behavioral problems than onset during adolescents (Keenan et al, 2010b) and are more likely to have severe consequences into adulthood (Odgers et al, 2008).…”
