OBJECTIVEThe present study examined the validity and reliability of the James Supportive Care Screening (SCS), a tool to measure the distress of those diagnosed with cancer, for Turkish patients. METHODSAfter necessary approval was obtained from the oncology hospital, research was conducted with 280 chemotherapy outpatients. Content validity, construct validity, and criterion-related validity tests were used to evaluate validity of SCS use in Turkey, while internal consistency and test-retest reliability were measured to determine reliability. RESULTSContent validity index value based on ratings of experts on all items of SCS found on above 0.80. The Turkish version of the scale has 48 items based on 6 factors, and is similar to the original SCS measure. Confirmatory factor analysis . Cronbach's alpha value of scale was 0.918 and unchangeability against time was proven. CONCLUSIONJames Supportive Care Screening is a valid and reliable measurement tool for screening Turkish cancer patients.

In order to prevent misunderstanding of diagnosis, care and treatment procedures for cancer patients, it is suggested to establish a standard thorough set of procedures within the healthcare system in accordance with the recommendations of international cancer organizations. Following these recommendations, many countries in Europe have already set up cancer treatment centres as part of their own health care system. Along with the establishment of specialized breast cancer treatment centres, breast cancer treatment and nursing became a requirement in general oncology centres worldwide. Despite the establishment of breast cancer centres in different regions of Turkey, breast care nursing procedures have either not been introduced or are not adequately performed. In order to introduce this program effectively, improve understanding of the disease and provide continued quality treatment for cancer patients, the Ministry of Health should organize specialized in-service training programs for nurses within cancer centres, state hospitals and university hospitals. It is in light of this situation that the current review discusses the experience of breast cancer treatment centres and private practice in German-speaking countries, analysing their approach to specialized nursing and breast cancer care procedures.Key words: Cancer centers, breast care nurse, cancer care nursing, breast cancer, cancer patients ÖZET Uluslararası kanser örgütleri kanserin tanı ve tedavisinde ortaya çıkan karışıklığı gidermek için tedavi ve bakımın yapılandırmasında pratikte bir tür merkezleştirme anlamına gelen kanser merkezlerinin kurulmasını önermiştir. Bu öneriyle birlikte kanserin diğer türlerinde olduğu gibi meme sağlığı ve kanser merkezleri tıpkı dünyanın birçok ülkesinde olduğu gibi Avrupa sağlık sisteminde yerini almaya başlamıştır. Bu merkezlerde ise meme bakım ve kanser hemşireliğinin önemi belirgin olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Türkiye'de farklı bölgelerde meme kanseri merkezleri oluşmaya başlamasına karşın oluşturulan ekip içerisinde bu özel dal hemşireleri henüz yerlerini almamıştır. Bu özel dal hemşireliğinin bu merkezlerdeki beklenen rolünü üstlenebilmesi ve hastalara daha iyi tedavi ve bakım hizmetinin sunulabilmesi için Sağlık Bakanlığına bağlı veya üniversite hastaneleri içerisinde hizmet içi eğitim programlarının oluşturulması gerekir. Meme kanseri merkezlerinin Almanca konuşulan ülkel-erdeki kurulma amacı bu merkezlerin işleyiş biçimleri ve özel alan hemşire-liğinin tanıtıldığı bu derleme ile ülkemizdeki bu alandaki tartışmalara katkı sağlamak amaçlanmıştır.Anahtar sözcükler: Kanser merkezleri, meme bakım hemşiresi, kanser bakım hemşiresi, meme kanseri, kanser hastaları K anserin tanı ve tedavisinde karışıklığı gidermek için tedavi ve bakımın yapılandırmasında merkezleşme ön plana çıkmıştır. Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the world and in our country. Despite early diagnosis and improved treatment possibilities, breast cancer is difficult to accept and a major source of anxiety. It brings various psychosocial problems to the agenda. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of depression and anxiety in the patients admitted to the outpatient clinic with the complaint of a mass in the breast and to determine the effect of mass on the mental health of women. Methods: This study is an analytical case-control study. All of the participants were female (n=200). Patients filled the questionnaire containing the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the sociodemographic data form. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the case and control groups in terms of the marital status, living with someone, monthly income level, place of residence, occupation, and education level (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between case and control groups in terms of the mean BDI score (19.6±1.05, 8.92±0.62, respectively, p<0.001). There was also a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean BAI score (20.34±1.23, 7.88±0.71, respectively, p<0.001). Conclusion: In our study, the incidence of depression and severe anxiety was significantly higher in the women admitted to the outpatient clinic with the complaint of a breast mass than in the healthy women.
