Proximity Warning and Excavator Control System for Prevention of Collision Accidents

Abstract: Construction is a hazardous industry in which accidents occur frequently. Occupational accidents at construction sites are a serious public health issue in Korea. Construction site conditions often create dangerous situations by requiring workers and heavy equipment to work in close proximity to each other. In 2015, approximately 11% (46) of the 437 occupational fatalities in the construction industry in Korea resulted from workers colliding with objects or equipment. In this paper, we present a proximity warn… Show more

“…A lack of situation awareness has been listed as one of the bigger causes of accidents in safetycritical situations [7]. Studies on how to support operators' awareness show that safety-enhancing systems, for example collision avoidance systems, can assist operators while carrying out their tasks [8,9]. However, having to look away in order to obtain the information can result in an increased risk of incidents.…”

“…Safety systems applied to excavators can be also found easily. RFID technology has been used to prevent collision accidents [31,32]. Teizer mainly used radio frequency (RF), light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and position data to implement an autonomous proactive real-time system [33].…”

“…They operate best in open-pit mine environments. RFID PWSs are the 2 of most commonly used commercially available PWSs, as they can recognize both near and far objects using ultra-high frequency and very-low frequency signals [13][14][15][16][17].…”
