“…The approach to evidence mapping accompanied by a visual evidence and gap map has been developed by several agencies (see Saran and White, 2018) [26], most notably by the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) [27] in the field of international development and subsequently adopted and adapted to a wider a range of sectors through the Campbell Collaboration. These include, for example, transport [28], youth violence, disability (Saran et al [29]), employment (Campbell et al [30]), and health and elder abuse [31] (Table 1).…”

“…Elder abuse is a prevalent, malignant and complex issue, affecting millions of older people globally, including those residing in residential care settings (RCS) (Botngård et al., 2021; Duffy et al., 2022; Estenson et al., 2022; Liu et al., 2021; Mikton et al., 2022; Phelan, 2023; Schultes et al., 2021). The prevalence of elder abuse worldwide is difficult to estimate, due to disagreements in definitions (Wallace & Crabb, 2017) notwithstanding variations in reporting processes (Donnelly, 2019).…”

“…It is estimated in a meta-analysis that one in every six older adults in the world has experienced some form of abuse or mistreatment annually (Yon et al , 2017). The World Health Organization (WHO, 2002) defines elder abuse as “a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person (p. 152),” of which the main forms include physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, financial and organisational abuse, as well as neglect (Mikton et al , 2022). The prevalence rates of elder abuse can vary to a great extent according to the types of abuse, study samples and research methodologies.…”

“…As the global population ages and diversifies, the number of elder abuse victims can expand rapidly if the prevalence rates remain constant (Mikton et al , 2022). The rising elder population underscores the pressing need of cost-effective measures to stop elder abuse, especially in caregiving settings.…”
