Protective effect of N-Acetylcysteine against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer: a pharmacological assessment in mice

Abstract: Aim:Since there is an increasing need for gastric ulcer therapies with optimum benefit-risk profile. This study was conducted to investigate gastro-protective effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer models in mice.Materials and Methods:A total of 41 mice were allocated into six groups consisted of 7 mice each. Groups 1 (normal control) and 2 (ulcer control) received distilled water at a dose of 10 ml/kg, groups 3, 4 and 5 were given NAC at doses 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg, respectiv… Show more

“…17,18 In mice, ethanol consumption can produce oxidative stress and acute inammatory reaction. 19 However, oral administration of KFP-H008 effectively reversed ethanolinduced gastric injury in a dose-dependent manner, particularly at the dose of 8 mg kg À1 , the % inhibition was up to 72.81% (Fig. 1).…”

“…Group II-(C + NAC) rats receiving standard type LSM feed as well as N-acetylcysteine solution at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight intragastrically (once a day, every day for eight weeks) at a volume of 2 mL/kg body weight (NAC, Sigma A9165) [26];…”

“…In fact, NAC has gastroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects and these gastroprotective effects are due to the NAC's antioxidant properties (20). It has also been stated that the gastroprotective effects of NAC are also due to its anti-secretory effects (21). In another study, Soliman et al (22) concluded that NAC's gastroprotective role is due the anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.…”
