Protective Effect of Humic Acids Against Heavy Metal Stress in Triticale

Abstract: The effects of copper and cadmium and the preparation Biomin (natural substance extracted from coal with a.i. humic acids) on the biometric parameters, some stress markers and enzymatic activities in leaves and roots of triticale plants were investigated. The functional carbon distribution in Biomin was analyzed by 13 C NMR. It was found that all treatments retarded the growth and fresh weight of the plants. Heavy metals enhanced the content of stress markers proline and malondialdehyde and the activities of g… Show more

“…Furthermore, HA + FA increased LRWC and decreased MP (Table 2 ). Similarly, it was reported in previous studies that HA + FA applications mitigated the negative impact of heavy metal stress on plant growth properties in lettuce 26 (Haghighi et al 2010), radish 22 , curly lettuce 9 , triticale 27 , corn 28 and wheat 29 . Humic substances are natural organic polyelectrolytes found in humus, which stabilize organic matter in the soil.…”

“…Shao et al 33 showed that antioxidant activity enhanced under stress conditions. On the other hand, Sergiev et al 27 suggested that heavy metal applications did not have a significant effect on CAT activity, whereas it increased SOD, GST (glutathione-S-transferase), and GPOX (guaiacol peroxidase) activity in triticale. Similar to our results, Ozkay et al 9 indicated that heavy metal stress increased SOD activity in curly lettuce, and HA applications supported this increase.…”

“…After the simultaneous application of HS and heavy metals, the enzyme activities involved in oxidative scavenging (e.g. guaiacol peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione-S-transferase) were reduced in comparison to the heavy metal-treated plants (Sergiev et al, 2013). Similar results were observed by Haghighi et al (2010) in which it was observed that HA successfully lowered antioxidant enzyme activity at HA concentrations of 100 mg L −1 leading to a decrease in leaf Cd content of Cd treated plants.…”

“…This could act as a signal for root-to-shoot distribution of certain plant growth regulators (polyamines) and phytohormones (cytokinins and abscisic acid) (Mora et al, 2010). To our knowledge, limited information is available about the possibilities of HSs to protect plants grown under unfavorable conditions (Kamenova-Jouhimenko et al, 1997Sergiev et al, 2013;Zhang et al, 2013). The authors reported that HAs could protect pea and triticale plants from the toxic action of high concentrations of Cu and Cd as well as Malus robusta seedlings from drought stress.…”
