Prostatic Hemangiosarcoma in a Dog: Clinical and Pathologic Findings

Abstract: Prostatic hemangiosarcoma (HS) appears to be rare in the dog. 5 In 3 of 4 previously reported cases, the prostate was involved via metastasis. 7,10,11 For 1 dog, the primary tumor presumably was located in the prostate gland, but no details were given. 3 The present report documents what we believe is a primary HS of the prostate in a dog that presented with clinical signs of urinary tract disease. The prostate tumor and metastases had microscopic features of a poorly differentiated HS, and the diagnosis was c… Show more

“…In two published cases, hemangiosarcoma was localized into the retroperitoneal space; the first one encircled the aorta and the second one compressed the left and right iliac veins . A few reported cases of primary hemangiosarcoma have been localized to the prostatic gland, urethra, and uterine remnant in spayed female dogs However, a primary site of hemangiosarcoma is considered to be rare in the canine urinary tract and reproductive system …”

“…Tumors of nonepithelial origin are particularly rare within the prostatic gland . Fibrosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, leiomyoma, and hemangiosarcoma have been identified in the canine prostate . Only individual cases of malignant lymphoma affecting the prostate in dogs have been reported so far .…”

“…3 Fibrosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, leiomyoma, and hemangiosarcoma have been identified in the canine prostate. [3][4][5][6][7] Only individual cases of malignant lymphoma affecting the prostate in dogs have been reported so far. [8][9][10][11] Canine malignant lymphoma is typically a multicentric disease, even though on occasion the lymphomatous neoplastic infiltrate is limited to one organ as in extranodal presentations.…”
