Proposal of a New Specific Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test for Taekwondo Athletes

Abstract: The objective of this study is to evaluate the cardiorespiratory variables of Taekwondo athletes while performing incremental exercise test on an ergometer using a ramp protocol and to propose a specific protocol for assessing these physiological variables during Taekwondo practice. Fourteen athletes participated in 2 incremental exercise tests: a treadmill exercise test (TREADtest) and a Taekwondo-specific exercise test (TKDtest). The TKDtest consists in 1-minute stages of kicks with an incremental load betwe… Show more

“…For the ratio between High Intensity Movement (HIM) and Low Intensity Movement (LIM), sum of time without attacks was divided by the number of attacks ratio [ 35 ]. The analyses showed a high intra-class correlation [ 53 ] of 0.93 which corresponds to other studies [ 35 , 54 , 55 ].…”

“…Table 2 illustrates the main characteristics of the 39 eligible scientific contributions in terms of the applied sport-specific test, the tested physical and/or physiological attributes, the measured outcomes, and the number of female and male participants and their athletic background/expertise. Publication years ranged from 1997 (Utter et al, 1997 ) to 2017 (Araujo et al, 2017 ; Chaabene et al, 2017b ; Sant'Ana et al, 2017 ), with an increasing trend starting from 2007 (Figure 2 ). Judo was represented in 15 articles (39%), whereas the relative picture for taekwondo, karate, fencing, wrestling, and amateur boxing was 8 (20%), 7 (18%), 4 (10%), 3 on (8%), and 2 (5%), respectively.…”

“…In this context, Bridge et al (2014) have reported that these attributes appear to be conducive to achieving success in international competition. Recently, several taekwondo-related studies have focused on the development of sport-specific tests that meet the particular demands of the discipline (Araujo et al, 2017;Chaabene et al, 2018;Rocha al., 2016a,b;Tayech et al, 2018). Against this background and as part of the assessment of anaerobic power in taekwondo athletes, Tayech et al (2018) recently studied the reliability and criterion validity of the Taekwondo Anaerobic Intermittent Kick Test (TAIKT).…”
