Taekwondo Anaerobic Intermittent Kick Test: Discriminant Validity and an Update with the Gold-Standard Wingate Test

Abstract: The aim of this study was to update the validity of the Taekwondo Anaerobic Intermittent Kick Test compared with the 30-s Wingate anaerobic test as the "Gold-Standard", squat jump and countermovement jump tests. The second objective was to examine whether this new specific test would be able to effectively discriminate between elite taekwondo athletes of different competitive levels. Twenty taekwondo athletes (15 males and 5 females) participated in the validation component, whereas 18 (14 males and 4 females)… Show more

“…Due to training commitments, conducting a crossover study design (which would have enhanced the statistical power) was challenging to achieve. Third, we only assessed anaerobic performance by using a sport-specific test while future studies investigating other fitness components such as aerobic, muscular strength and power, flexibility, speed, and agility that are critical for taekwondo success are required [ 1 , 28 ]. Lastly, we only included males with low participant sample size in each group.…”

“…The TAIKT is a valid and reliable sport-specific anaerobic test to determine peak and mean power output and fatigue index in taekwondo athletes [4]. TAIKT has excellent reliability (ICC > 0.90) with the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test and Wingate test [4,28]. According to an official taekwondo match, participants completed 3 bouts interspersed with 1-min of passive recovery [1].…”

“…In addition to the vertical jumping ability test, many previous studies have also used the Wingate anaerobic test to evaluate the effects of lower limb muscle strength and anaerobic power after PEIMD [ 40 ], and it has been proved to correlate with the CMJ test [ 41 ]. Our research seemed to confirm this result.…”

“…Start and end position was upright, in a hip-wide standing position, with hands placed on the hips [ 16 ]. The hands were not allowed to be moved during the whole measurement, in order not to influence the jump height [ 17 ]. On command, the participant lowered their center of mass by bending the knees to a self-selected grade, and immediately after reaching the lowest position, they jumped vertically as high as possible.…”
