Prognostic value of preoperative serum CEA level compared to clinical staging: III. An approach to scoring of prognostic factors in colorectal cancer

Abstract: In a clinical study of observed postoperative survival of colorectal cancer patients, we investigated the application of a risk score based on tumor-related prognostic parameters. Six hundred seventy-four patients have been registered for primary surgery of colorectal cancer since 1974 who did not receive further postoperative treatments. The prognostic parameters included operability, tumor extension, and preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level. The scoring system was based on the average deat… Show more

“…CEA, detected almost 30 years ago (Gold and Freedman, 1965), is the only clinically established marker for preoperative diagnosis and follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer (Brummendorf et al, 1985;Roberts, 1988;Minton and Chevinsky, 1989;Kuusela et al, 1991). Because of a low sensitivity in early stages of colorectal cancer, CEA is not an ideal marker for preoperative diagnosis (Brummendorf et al, 1985;Roberts, 1988;Kuusela et al, 1991;Nilsson et al,1992).…”

“…Zamcheck N, Doos WG, Prudente R, Lurie BB, Gottlieb L,S: of parameters as long as they provide additional prognostic information to each other. A first approach was made by scoring of prognostic factors [21]. However, further extensive studies might reveal other criteria of more comprehensive prognostic value.…”

“…Chirurgische Radikalität ist ein hoch signifikanter prognostischer Faktor (3, 8, 20). In unserem Krankenkollektiv scheint es einen wichtigen Zusammenhang zu geben, der uns vorauszusetzen erlaubt, dass eine kurative Operation bei dem normalen präoperativen CEA‐Wert mit 91%iger Wahrscheinlichkeit möglich ist.…”
