ABO blood types are associated with the prognosis of several malignancies. However, the role of the ABO blood type in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains elusive. Here, we evaluated the prognostic role of the ABO blood group in 691 HCC patients after hepatectomy by Cox regression analysis. A prognostic nomogram was generated to predict the 3 and 5-year overall survival (OS). A total of 262 HCC patients (37.9%) had blood group O, 199 (28.8%) had blood group A, 165 (23.9%) had blood group B, and 65 (9.4%) had blood group AB. The median OS was 55 months in patients with blood group O, 39 months for blood group A, 34 months for blood group B, and 34 months for blood group AB patients (P = 0.001, log-rank test). There were significant differences in OS between patients with blood groups O and A [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.416; 95% CI, 1.101–1.820; P = 0.007], blood group B (HR = 1.736; 95% CI, 1.333–2.262; P < 0.001), blood group AB (HR = 1.739; 95% CI, 1.210–2.499; P = 0.003) and non-O blood groups (HR = 1.485; 95% CI, 1.204–1.830; P < 0.001). Our constructed nomogram (c-index = 0.687) predicted the prognosis more accurately than the TNM stage alone(c-index = 0.601). In conclusion, non-O blood groups are poor prognostic indicators for HCC following hepatectomy. Our findings justify further external validation in larger cohorts.

More than 30 blood group systems have been recognized by International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). ABO blood group is one of the most studied blood group system. ABO blood group system consist of three alleles A, B and O, out which A and B are co-dominant and O is recessive. Many researchers and investigators have found association between ABO blood group and cancer risk. It was found from the recent data that blood group A and AB is associated with increased pancreatic and gastric cancer risk. In the present study data of ABO blood group of 243 patients, both males and females, with confirmed cases of cancer was obtained from Sir Sunderlal hospital, Institute of Medical Science (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Apex hospital, DLW Road, Varanasi. 250 Samples of both males and females were taken as control. Out of 243 cancer patients 117 were males and 126 were females. In 243 cases enrolled in present study, highest number of cases were of breast cancer among women and lowest were rectal cancer. It was found that A blood group was associated with breast cancer, oral cancer, liver cancer and ovarian cancer as compared to other blood group and blood group O was associated with lung cancer, gastric cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer and endometrial cancer.

ABO blood type has been reported to be associated with various types of cancer such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. We aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between ABO blood subtypes and testicular cancer incidence in Turkish population. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of all patients who underwent inguinal orchiectomy in our department between 2008 and 2018. Results: A total of 138 patients were included in the study. The age of the patients ranged from two to 67 years, with a mean age of 32.9±10.9 years. Of the 138 participants, 45 (32.6%) had blood type A, 27 (19.6%) had blood type B, 50 had blood type O (36.2%) and 16 (11.6%) had blood type AB. One hundred and twenty-five patients (90.6%) were Rhesus (+) and 13 patients (9.4%) were Rhesus (-). There was no statistically significant difference between ABO blood subtypes according to testicular pathology (p=0.713). Interestingly, the percentage of patients with AB blood subtype was the lowest. Conclusion: These results suggest that Turkish men with O blood subtype and Rh (+) are prone to develop testicular cancer. However, these findings should be supported by further studies conducted with a large number of participants.
