We determine the productivity of determinerless PPs in German quantitatively, restricting ourselves to the preposition unter. The study is based on two German newspaper corpora, comprising some 210 million words. The problematic construction, i.e. unter followed by a determinerless singular noun occurs some 16.000 times in the corpus. To clarify the empirical productivity of the construction, we apply a productivity measure developed by Baayen (2001) to the syntactic domain by making use of statistical models suggested in Evert (2004). We compare two different models and suggest a gradient descent search for parameter estimation. Our results show that the combination of unter+noun must in fact be characterized as productive, and hence that a syntactic treatment is required.

Tomando como punto de partida la combinación usual preposicional (CUP) unter Geschrei, el objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en profundizar en la interacción existente entre las secuencias formulaicas de una lengua y su variabilidad lingüística. A través del análisis de corpus, se verá a qué restricciones léxicas está sujeta la CUP objeto de estudio (o, mejor dicho, qué preferencias léxicas presenta en el uso), especialmente en lo que se refiere a su slot adjetival. Se parte de la premisa de que cuanto más variables sean estos slots a nivel léxico, más fijado estará el correspondiente esquema fraseológico en el lexicón mental de los hablantes nativos.

In this paper, we present an analysis of so-called determinerless PPs in German, i.e. prepositional phrases that allow singular count nouns to occur without an accompanying determiner, despite other rules in the grammar requiring the presence of the determiner. The analysis is based on annotated corpus data, which are fed into a statistical classifier (applying logistic regression). Superficially, the syntax of bare prepositional phrases is difficult to capture, and intuitions cannot be easily elicited. The analysis is based on data sets for two pairs of German prepositions:mit‘with’ andohne‘without’, andüber‘over, above’ andunter‘under, below’. The results of the classifiers applied to annotated data indicate which syntactic, morphological and semantic features are responsible for determiner omission. We are able to detect common properties of all four prepositions, as well as preposition-specific, and idiosyncratic properties. The apparently unsystematic conditions for determiner omission can be discerned by tracing the interaction of these properties.
