Productivity of a preparative high‐performance liquid chromatography isolation of anacardic acids from cashew nut shell liquid

Abstract: The anacardic acids are alkyl phenols, with biological activities, obtained as a byproduct from cashew nut processing. The anacardic acids isolation by preparative reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography was developed injecting large pulse from 50 to 200 mg of cashew nut shell liquid through a C 18 column eluted with methanol, water and acetic acid (80:20:1). The separations were carried out at 25 • C and monitored at 280 nm. Yield, recovery, purity, solvent consumption and productivity were anal… Show more

“…It can be seen that the peak at about 22 min increased with each increase in the ratio of CNSL. This was estimated to be the peak of anacardic acid, one of the main components of CNSL [30]. The calibration curves were drawn with the area of the main peak represen thitsiol 16 in Figures 5 and 6 on the y-axis and the concentration of the blended lacq samples on the x-axis.…”

“…(purity ≥ 96%) were from Sigma-Aldrich (Saint Louis, MO, USA), and ultra-pure water (type 1) was obtained from a Milli-Q system (São Paulo, Brazil). The triene AnAc standard (15:3) used to obtain the analytical curve was obtained by the method described previously [11].…”

“…Structurally, AnAc are classified as phenolic lipids because they have a long carbon chain with structural variations. The number of carbon atoms present in this chain can vary between 2 and 17 [10,11], with the number of unsaturated C=C bonds ranging between 0 and 3 [11,12]. However, the structural differences between AnAc can give them different biological activities [13] and sensory properties [14].…”

“…Anacardic acids were obtained by preparative HPLC fractionation of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) as described by Oiram Filho, Zocolo, Canuto, Silva Junior, and de Brito, 2019. 9 The compounds present in the anacardic acid mixture were isolated on a reverse phase chromatographic column Waters SunFirePrep C18 OBD (100 x 19 mm x 5 μm). The mobile phase was used in an isocratic mode using methanol, water and acetic acid in the proportion (90:10:1), run time of 40 min, and a flow of 3 mL.min -1 , at 25 ºC.…”
