The present research was conducted to assess the reproductive performance, health management, and marketing system of native sheep in selected areas of Bangladesh. The data was collected from selected 11 Upazilas of 6 districts in Bangladesh. A pre-tested interview schedule was used to collect data from 1768 sheep rearing farmers by using a simple random sampling technique and analyzed descriptively. The study denoted that the age at 1 st heat or puberty was 7.01±0.03 months. However, the age at 1 st lambing was found 12.65±0.03 months irrespective of areas. The litter size was found 1.93±0.01 and the highest was in Balagonj (2.17±0.04) Upazila. Moreover, the average birth weight was 0.94±0.01 kg and the highest was in Companygonj (1.76±0.04 kg) followed by Subornochar (1.63±0.18 kg) Upazila. The service per conception rate was 1.10±0.01. Most of the farmers (60.18%) were used own ram 100% of farmers were used natural breeding for breeding practice. The sheep rearing farmers in the study areas were found moderately aware of different neo-natal nourishment practices. However, only 6.39% of farmers in different study areas found dipping of their sheep. The sheep mostly affected by pneumonia (43.72%), diarrhea (40.33%), alopecia (28.51%), bloat (22.79%), and parasitic infection (15.55%) found in the study areas. The dog bite (15.55%) was found a major problem in native sheep rearing irrespective of the study areas. Only 28.51% and 12.56% of farmers were used anthelmintic and vaccine respectively. Most of the farmers sell their sheep in the hat/Bazar (82.75%) and 60.46% of farmers sell sheep to paiker or bapari followed by the butcher (22.33%). Furthermore, most of the farmers (82.28%) fixed value for the sheep on the basis of eye estimation. There was no record of wool selling irrespective of study areas. Lack of organized and structured marketing system found in the study areas. Emphasis should be given to the sustainable improvement of native sheep and marketing systems to improve the livelihoods of rural poor farmers in Bangladesh.

A study was carried out to know the impact of protein supplementation of fertility and expressions of fertility gene BMP1R. Three ISO-caloric but different levels of protein supplement ration (11.70% CP for control/To, 12.99% CP for T1 and 13.86% CP for T2) was fed to three different groups of sheep. DNA was extracted from the whole blood sample for PCR of the BMP1R fertility gene and purified PCR products were sequenced by Sanger sequencer. Sequence alignment, pair and multi-alignment comparison of the BMP1R gene of the species were done with MEGA6. The semen volume (1.0 ml), sperm counts (4.2×10 7 million), percentage of normal (94.3%) and viable sperm (3.7%) were higher in treatment 2 than the other two groups. The semen volume (1.0 ml), sperm counts (4.2×107 million), the percentage of normal (94.3%) and viable sperm (3.7%) were higher in treatment 2 than the other two groups. Ewes treated with supplemented, protein concentrate reached the conception at an earlier age (Treatment 1, 9.5 ± 0.16 months and treatment 2, 10.3 ± 0.04 months) than control (9.8 ± 0.15 months). The lambing interval varied, from 198 to 202 days. Lamb’s birth weights of three treated groups were ranging from 1.2 to 1.39 kg. The designated sequences of BMP1R gene were revealed 100% homology with the sequence of Kazakh sheep. The present study indicated that the influence of nutrition on reproductive performance and genomic study will be helpful for genetic improvement of low productive sheep.

Background: A dozen of veterinary academic institutions offer degree courses with pre-clinical and clinical studies and conduct research works but their activities are not coordinated and unified in Bangladesh. An attempt has been made to review the pre-clinical and clinical research reports in small ruminants which would help the concerned academicians, research scientists and research funded organizations to update their knowledge of specialization and use this reference as a starting point for formulation of the future academic and research guidelines. Objectives: The main objectives are to provide an integrated, systematic overview of all the available published research reports on the pre-clinical and clinical aspects of small ruminants to update knowledge and to identify research insights, existing gaps and future research directions. Materials and Methods: The available research reports on pre-clinical and clinical aspects of small ruminants published mainly in journals during the last six decades in Bangladesh from 1966 to 2019 were reviewed. Data obtained were analyzed statistically based on pre-clinical and clinical subjects, host species, age, breeds, clinical prevalence and decade-wise to assess the rate of publication. Results: Of the 665 selected articles, 621 research papers published on small ruminants during the last six decades from Bangladesh were systematically reviewed, of which 340 (54.75%) articles reported as pre-clinical and 281 (45.25%) on clinical aspects with significantly higher rates in goats (n = 486; 78.26%) than sheep (n = 135; 21.74%). Out of 126 recorded clinical diseases and disorders in small ruminants, 125 (99.21%) reported in goats and 44 (34.92%) in sheep, with 43 (34.13%) common in both goats and sheep but only pregnancy toxaemia (0.79%) reported in sheep. The influence of age and breeds on the prevalence of clinical diseases and disorders associated with their morbidity and mortality are described and discussed. Conclusions: This unified review article would serve as a guide for the veterinary medical academicians, research scientists and organizations for future studies and research directions. The disease profiles and their morbidity and mortality status in small ruminants might help the practicing veterinarians, government, human health care providers and neighboring countries who may need to take action.
