Producing governable subjects: Images of childhood old and new

Abstract: Conceptions of childhood in terms of 'evil' and 'innocence' transcend time and culture. These conflicting images are deployed by Chris Jenks as the Dionysian and Apollonian models of childhood to symbolize external and internal forms of control. Drawing on the literature on governmentality this article revisits these models and introduces a third -the 'Athenian' childloosely analogous and supplementary to those developed by Jenks. This model is necessary in order to take account of relatively recent strategies… Show more

“…Smith (2012) predicts that children are a target for new governmental modes of regulation, where children are considered partners in the socialisation process. It is warned that this may problematize young people who do not choose appropriately, re-inscribing disadvantage as a personal or familial failing (Graham 2007).…”

“…However, the rights of choice, freedom and autonomy, and consequently the active participation of children in public life, are usually considered exclusively in relation to consumption and the world of goods. In this sense, we could claim that the "inherently competent child" is, after all, a guided child, which is formed by neo-liberal strategies aiming to give prominence to children's abilities for self-regulation and self-management (Smith, 2012). Moreover, within this discourse, people should be capable of working constantly on their own, in line with the demands of the global economy of knowledge.…”

“…Yet, in late modernity, a different conceptualisation of childhood is developed, as the sustainability of the current hegemonic neo-liberal regimes presupposes a different socialisation process of children. Specifically, children's welfare is closely connected with autonomy, and therefore the child is perceived as an active partner in the socialisation process (Smith, 2012). However, the competent, autonomous and reflective child represents a relatively new form of governance, which emphasises children's views, and their right of choice and participation in the decision making about matters that concern them.…”
