In this study, we evaluate the effects of intercropping pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) with tropical pastures for feeding Nellore cattle and compared animal performance and enteric CH4 emissions with other pasture-based systems during the dry and rainy seasons of 2021. Thirty-six Nellore steers (with a body weight of 221 ± 7 kg and an age of 15–16 months) were randomly distributed in three treatments with three replicates (in paddocks of 1.5 hectares each): (1) a degraded pasture of Urochloa spp. (DEG); (2) a recovered and fertilized pasture of Urochloa spp. (REC); and (3) pigeon pea intercropped with Urochloa spp. (MIX). Enteric CH4 emissions were estimated using the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas technique, and dry matter intake (DMI) was determined using internal (iNDF) and external (TiO2) markers. Forages were collected by hand plucking after observations of ingestive behavior, and feces was collected after voluntary defecation. The proportion of grass and legume intake was estimated by C stable isotopes, and the forage nutritional quality was determined, while animal performance was monitored monthly, and the stocking rate was adjusted by the “put and take” technique. The results indicated that intercropping pigeon pea with tropical grasses is an interesting strategy for sustainable livestock production based on pastures. The MIX treatment was able to meet the nutritional requirements of the animals, which presented higher performance. In addition, there was a reduction in CH4 emissions up to 70% when expressed per average daily weight gain in comparison to the DEG treatment.

O trabalho visou coletar a percepção de extensionistas rurais (ER) sobre a possível resistência de produtores ao Pastoreio Racional Voisin (PRV) e as dificuldades que cercam a adoção e consolidação do método. O público amostral incluiu 86 ER em atuação no Oeste Catarinense, vinculados à Epagri, Senar, prefeituras, cooperativas, ONGs, bem como profissionais autônomos. O estudo envolveu a avaliação das respostas dadas a duas questões abertas de um questionário sobre PRV, submetidas à técnica da Análise de Conteúdo, sendo as categorias de análise definidas a partir das respostas e sua interpretação. Cerca de 70% dos ER consideram que há preconceito e/ou resistência dos produtores em relação ao PRV. As dificuldades apontadas foram classificadas em seis categorias (classes de fatores), relativas ao próprio produtor, ao sistema ou modelo de produção, à assistência técnica, às concepções técnicas e filosóficas do PRV, à visão dos atores sobre o método em si, e a aspectos mercadológicos e conjunturais externos. O limitado conhecimento e entendimento do produtor rural sobre o método foi o aspecto mais pontuado pelos ER, tendo sido mencionado por 55% dos participantes. A baixa adoção do PRV revela-se uma questão multicausal, que envolve aspectos tanto do ambiente “dentro da porteira”, quanto “fora da porteira”, sugerindo que uma maior adesão ao método requer ações em várias frentes, inclusive uma melhor capacitação técnica e difusão tecnológica.

Reproductive biotechnologies are emerging as an important element for livestock; however, some strategies must be modified to adapt to different breeding systems, such as the use of follicular synchronization protocols. This study aimed to evaluate follicular synchronization using estradiol benzoate (EB), in the presence of the corpus luteum (CL) from Wagyu oocyte donors in in vitro embryo production (IVEP). Rounds of IVEP were performed in heifers and cows (n=19) that were classified into three groups: G1/CL - animals with CL, G2/WCL - animals without CL, and G3/CL + EB - animals with CL that were subjected to follicular synchronization with EB at D0. The groups G1/CL and G2/WCL were considered the control and undertook the natural process of follicular dynamics. The results showed that the synchronization of the follicular wave with the application of EB in the presence of CL, presented a smaller number of small (6.05 ± 0.55) and large follicles (0.45 ± 0.15), but increased (P < 0.05) the number of medium-sized follicles (16.20 ± 0.90). However, the results of ovum pick up showed that regardless of whether or not EB was applied, and regardless of the presence or absence of CL in the Wagyu donor, there was no difference among the groups (P > 0.05) concerning the number of viable oocytes and the viability rate. It was concluded that follicular synchronization using EB in Wagyu oocyte donors that presented a CL, increased the number of medium-sized follicles. However, there was no improvement in the efficiency of ovum pick up, in vitro embryo production, and pregnancy rate.
