Current orange tree cultivation practices in the Brazilian State of Amazonas present several production problems, being the inadequate weed management the most important one, and significantly affecting fruit productivity. However, if weeds are managed properly, their coexistence with orange cultivars does not affect the fruit yield of orange trees. Thus, the objective of this research was to identify the period of longer weed interference in orange production. The treatments were conducted during the 2013 and 2014 harvests as follows: one control treatment with no coexistence of weeds and crop throughout the growing season; and six periods of coexistence (October to January, February to May, June to September, October to May, October to January, June to September, and February to September). The coexistence of weeds from October to May with orange trees increased the fall of unripe fruits and reduced the yield and the number of oranges per plant. Therefore, this period was considered as the most critical one for the control of weeds in orange trees.

A fruticultura, mais especificamente a citricultura, tem um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento e incremento do PIB no Brasil. Para o estado de Alagoas, esta atividade tem ganhado bastante destaque. Mais especificamente a citricultura sustentável vem crescendo nos últimos anos pelo fato dos consumidores buscarem produtos isentos de substâncias danosas ao organismo humano e ao meio ambiente. Logo, os consumidores buscam cada vez mais produtos orgânicos ou agroecológicos para seu consumo, atrelando a estes, melhores características de sabor. Neste sentido, objetivou-se comparar as características físicas e físico-químicas de laranjas Pera adquiridas em diferentes pontos de comercialização e submetidas a diferentes sistemas de cultivo: orgânico ou convencional. Adotou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado sendo avaliados quatro pontos de aquisição das frutas, submetidos a dois sistemas de cultivo, com cinco repetições. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características físicas das frutas: diâmetros horizontal e vertical e o peso das frutas, e as características físico-químicas foram: pH, acidez titulável, ºBrix e índice de maturação. Constatou-se que as laranjas adquiridas e submetidas ao sistema convencional de cultivo apresentaram maiores valores para todas as características físicas, enquanto que as frutas adquiridas na feira orgânica (UFAL), apresentaram os maiores valores para as características físico-químicas, que, por sua vez, influenciam diretamente na escolha das frutas pelos consumidores, a exemplo da doçura representada pelo °Brix.

“…It is worth mentioning that it was only in the late 1980s that citriculture became an economic option in Paraná, supported by research results from the Agronomic Institute of Paraná (IAPAR). The implantation of citrus in Paraná started in the Alto Ribeira region with the production of tangerines and began to consolidate in the late 1980s with the production of oranges in the northwestern region (IAPAR, 1987;AULER et al, 2008;TAZIMA et al, 2010). However, it was in the 1990s when the integrated management for the prevention of citrus canker, proposed by IAPAR, took place, that a more expressive expansion of the citrus activity was observed in Paraná (TAZIMA et al, 2009), establishing orange as the main product of Paraná's citrus production.…”

Spatial dynamics of orange production in the state of Paraná, Brazil

The aim of this study was to identify and qualify the microregions specialized in orange production and the spatial dynamics of citrus production in the state of Paraná, Brazil. For this purpose, data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and the Brazilian Central Bank were used. The location quotient (LQ) methodology was applied, the principal component analysis (PCA) and the cluster analysis were carried out, and information regarding the location of industries and agribusiness cooperatives that process orange juice in the state of Paraná was collected. The LQ results, subdivided into 5-year periods, denote changes in the spatial dynamics of orange production. Between 1998Between -2002Between and 2013Between -2017, the specialized microregions increased from nine to 11; in addition, the consolidation of a citrus belt, which extended from the northwestern to the northeast area of Paraná, took place. Two main components explained 89.16% of the total data variability and four clusters were identified. The microregion of Paranavaí was the most specialized and the most important for the orange production chain in Paraná. The dynamics of orange production were spatially associated with the location of industries and agribusiness cooperatives in the sector, which were concentrated in the northwestern and mid-northern Paraná.
