“…Process control, in some cases, can maintain or even improve the quality with less energy cost. For instance, [15] optimized the process parameters of a paper machine's dryer section to reduce the steam consumption in the multi-cylinder dryer and to decrease the loads of centrifugal blowers.…”

“…The energy use for the drying section in Chinese paper machine has been studied in a number of papers. [162][163][164][165][166][167] Exergy analysis was use to increase waste heat recovery reducing the energy use by 4.6%, [162] optimizing the process parameters for a newsprint machine reduced steam consumption by 8%, [163] a detailed static model of the paper dryer showed that the air supply temperature could be reduced from 112 to 100 C resulting in a specific heat reduction by 3.3%. [164] Chen et al [165][166][167] performed a similar detailed analysis of the dryer section showing that the total steam consumption for one machine could be reduced from 1.82 to 1.50 ton of steam per ton of water evaporated.…”

“…Mathematical programming methods based on the mass and energy balance are the most common approaches for energy optimization of the paper drying processes [7]. The first computerized design application established in the 1980s, used a sequential modular method in order to minimize energy use in heat recovery connecting to thermodynamic models [5].…”

“…Pettersson and Soderman [11] carried out the economic analysis and studied the impacts of cost factor variations to optimize the heat recovery systems in paper machines. Li et al, [7] developed a NLP method for integration of steam and air systems to parameter optimization of the energy usage in a multi-cylinder dryer section of a newsprint and liner board machine. In order to analyze the modeling, the dryer section was divided into different modules based on their functions and the simultaneous modular method was applied to optimize process design and operation.…”
