Businesses have been exposed to various challenges during the global pandemic, and their response to this disruption has impacted their resilience as well as their chances to overcome this crisis. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are changing their business models in order to adapt to this changing environment. Service-based industries have been hit particularly hard. This research investigates how SMEs operating in service industries have been coping with the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This research aims to gain insights into which transformation drivers they have focused on and which technologies they have selected as a means to respond to the disruption. These insights regarding SMEs are then explored according to their influence on the redefinition of sustainable business models in SMEs. The review data was analyzed via a customized research framework that contains three dimensions and 30 subconcepts. The results show the distribution of drivers and technologies across service sectors. They are organized into a Business Model Canvas and could be considered useful for academia and practitioners. The highly unpredictable environment allows for only a few feasible strategic approaches regarding an SME’s decision on to follow incumbents, to become a challenger, or to reinvent themselves based on their own transformation drivers and readiness to apply digital technologies.

Purpose This study aims to focus on dual embeddedness as an important channel through which foreign subsidiaries access and share valuable and idiosyncratic knowledge within the multinational corporation (MNC). The authors examine the dual embeddedness challenges of foreign subsidiaries based in the context of Iran as a transitional market. Design/methodology/approach The final sample includes 144 active foreign subsidiaries in Iran from across a broad range of industries. A structured questionnaire was distributed to firms and structural equation modeling was adopted to analyze the results. Findings The findings reveal how building external embeddedness in an environment with potentially poor access to valuable knowledge, and risk of knowledge leakage impacts the subsidiary’s ability to subsequently transfer this knowledge within the MNC. The authors identify the significance of absorptive capacity as a way for the subsidiary to access knowledge from and share knowledge with firms in the local market. Originality/value Departing from existing work on subsidiary embeddedness in developed markets, the authors reveal how competence creating subsidiaries manage dual embeddedness and knowledge transfer in transition economies that are low in knowledge stocks. The authors unpack how subsidiary absorptive capacity enables access to local knowledge in a transitional market and increases reverse knowledge transfer in the MNC. In doing so, the authors answer calls for work on the dynamic and complementary relationships that exists between subsidiary dual embeddedness, absorptive capacity and knowledge sourcing in less open markets. Focusing on Iran as a transitional economy, this study provides greater contextual nuance to the extant literature on subsidiary dual embeddedness.

Desa Cangkuang Kulon, Bandung memiliki potensi yang luar biasa apalagi telah menjadi sentra bisnis yang strategis di Bandung. Kemajuan bisnis ekonomi di Desa Cangkuang Kulon, Bandung ini terutama didukung oleh banyaknya industri keluarga yang bergerak di bidang kerajinan sepatu selama puluhan tahun. Namun sayangnya pertumbuhan dari industri sepatu ini masih terhambat untuk mencapai tingkal optimal. Kondisi ini terutama diakibatkan oleh strategi pengelolaan bisnis yang dilakukan secara konvensional, padahal kemajuan teknologi telah sangat berkembang pesat. Di samping itu, dengan adanya pandemik COVID-19 yang melanda dunia saat ini, kondisi ini terasa sangat membebani masyarakat di Desa Cangkuang Kulon dari sisi ekonomi dengan menurunnya jumlah penjualan secara drastis. Kondisi ini menuntut para pebisnis/pengusaha di Desa Cangkuang Kulon untuk bisa beradaptasi menghadapi perubahan globalisasi, terutama perubahan dan perkembangan teknologi. Secara vertical dan horizontal bisnis sekarang apalagi di masa pandemic sudah harus bisa berkolaborasi Bersama teknologi dan media platform lainnya. Tanpa itu semua, apalagi ketika bisnis hanya dijalankan secara konvensional, maka akan meningkatkan tingkat kesulitan bagi pengusaha bisnis di Desa Cangkuang Kulon, yang merupakan Unit Usaha Mikro, Kecil dan Menengah (UMKM) untuk bersaing di pasar yang semakin ketat. Kegiatan Abdimas ini memiliki 2 (dua) tujuan utama, yaitu (1) mengidentifikasi readyness level dari para pebisnis / pengusaha di Desa Cangkuang Kulon untuk dapat mengadopsi strategi bisnis E-Commercialization yang berbasis teknologi digital. ; serta (2) membekali pengusaha bisnis sepatu di Desa Cangkuang Kulon dengan pengetahuan pengelolaan bisnis yang berbasis teknologi digital, agar mampu bersaing di era globalisasi dan bertransformasi menjadi entrepreneurial society yang sebenarnya. Metodepengumpulan data yang akan dilakukan terbagi atas 2 tahap, dimana pada tahap awal akan melalui Focus Group Discussion (online) , dan dilanjutkan dengan kegiatan survey lapangan. Dengan menggunakan metode ini, diharapkan mampu meningkatkan minat masyarakat untuk ikut berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini, sehingga ketika dalam menjalankan proses pembelajaran untuk penerapan strategi E-Commercialization untuk meningkatkan kompetensi para pebisnis industri sepatu, masyarakat tidak terlalu mengalami kendala.
