Primary renal lymphoma: An incidental finding in an elderly male

Abstract: Primary renal lymphoma (PRL) is a rare disease process which represents less than 1% of all renal masses and is an uncommon type of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. PRL is of clinical significance due to the fact that unlike the more commonly seen renal cell carcinoma, PRL is treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by nephrectomy. This challenges the long held notion that preoperative biopsies are not necessary prior to nephrectomy for renal masses. In this paper, we present a case of a primary renal lymphoma an… Show more

“…Early diagnosis and treatment may improve survival of PRL, but the 5-year survival rate is only around 40-50%. 32 The prognosis of PRL depends mainly on the tumor stage. 19 Using data from the SEER, Chen et al 4 demonstrated that the incidence rate of PRL has been increasing significantly.…”

“…On kidney biopsy, one was diagnosed as a high-grade T-cell lymphoma, and the other case was diagnosed as a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, which was similar to other studies on primary renal lymphomas. [ 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 ]…”

“…PET is also useful in monitoring response to therapy. [70][71][72][73][74][75][76] It's worthy to note again, that final diagnosis cannot be made without tissue diagnosis and histopathology is the gold standard for the diagnosis of PRNHL. 11 Immunohistochemistry is also necessary to find out about the type of NHL which is very important to select the therapeutic chemotherapy regimen.…”

“…In more than 90% of the previous case reports, nephrectomy has been performed with the preliminary impression of RCC or other common renal tumors such as oncocytoma. 74 It is difficult to make generalizations; however most studies suggest that rituximab might be a useful addition to the chemotherapeutic regimen. 14 As most of PRNHLs are high grade B cell NHLs, overall mortality is high and even new treatment modalities have not change the survival significantly.…”
