Primary Extranodal Lymphomas of Gastrointestinal Localizations: A Single Institution 5-yr Experience

Abstract: This study is aimed at comparison of patients with extranodal lymphomas based on pathohistological findings differences (MALT vs non-MALT) as well as regarding gastric and non-gastric localization, and determining the significance of clinical-laboratory parameters with respect to therapeutic response and length of survival. A total of 56 patients with extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of the gastrointestinal tract were evaluated over a 5-yr period. Regarding the localization of the disease, the stomach was mo… Show more

“…However, in our study, statistical analysis found no significant difference in the OS and EFS between DLBCL and MALT lymphoma patients. And some other studies showed the same results [11,13,21,35]. Interestingly, we found that those studies in which survival difference was significant had lower proportion of patients treated with chemotherapy (33.6% [1] and 38.8% [10], respectively).…”

“…In these two studies, similar to our study, the stomach was the most common site of involvement and DLBCL was the most common histological subtype, whereas, according to another study in Europe (Mihaljevic et al, 2006) MALT lymphoma was accounted for 70% of GIL.…”

“…Several series from Europe, Canada-North America, and Asia have reported on primary GI lymphomas by lymphoma type and anatomic site [2-5,7,9,28-30]. Several trends emerge when reviewing the data collectively.…”

“…However, the majority of population based studies have been performed on Asian or European cohorts [2-9] with only one recent study from a Canadian-North American cohort [10]. Though studies from the United States (US) have been performed, most are several decades old, and use nomenclature that predates the current World Health Organization (WHO) classification for lymphomas [11,12].…”
