Primary carcinoid tumor of the liver: report of two cases with an emphasis on US findings

Abstract: Primary carcinoid tumor of the liver is rare, and its sonographic (US) findings have rarely been reported. We present two histologically proven cases. Both patients were asymptomatic and huge masses, found incidentally by US, were echogenic with many cystic areas. Lesions were markedly hypervascular on color Doppler US and angiography. Thus, primary carcinoid tumor of the liver should be considered when US detects this type of mass in asymptomatic patients.

“…Solid masses with cystic areas and hyperechoic or mixed pattern are common findings of PHCT detected by ultrasonic. Contrast-enhanced US showed a rapid and dense enhancement without parenchymal stain [5,6]. Concerning CT findings in PHCT, in most cases noncontrast images show low-density masses, and some have cystic component.…”

“…Although few previous reports have shown the characteristics of imaging findings of primary hepatic carcinoid tumors owing to their rarity, it has been thought, based on previous reports and our present cases, that the relatively characteristic imaging findings include cystic areas with hemorrhagic components (Takayasu et al 1992 ; Abdel Wahab et al 2006 ; Komatsuda et al 2005 ; Ulusan et al 2005 ; Touloumis et al 2008 ; Imaoka et al 1993 ; Fujino et al 1998 ; Oh et al 1998 ; Kehagias et al 1999 ; Hirata et al 2002 ; Aoki et al 1992 ; Yeung et al 2008 ; Shih et al 2005 ) and early enhanced solid areas (Iwao et al 2001 ; Lin et al 2009 ; Takayasu et al 1992 ; Abdel Wahab et al 2006 ; Komatsuda et al 2005 ; Ulusan et al 2005 ; Touloumis et al 2008 ; Iimuro et al 2002 ; Gao J et al 2011; Shah et al 2007 ).…”
