Prevention of Intraperitoneal Adhesions and Abscesses by Polysaccharides Isolated From Phellinus spp in a Rat Peritonitis Model

Abstract: We concluded that PG and PL had significant adhesion- and abscess-reducing effects and may act by modulating fibrinolytic capacity of uPA and/or tPA produced from macrophages in a rat peritonitis model.

“…Among these Phellinus mushrooms, PG used in this study has advantages over the other Phellinus mushrooms in that it has a very short growth period (3 months) compared to other Phellinus mushrooms (2-3 years) making it cheaper to produce. In addition, our recent studies have demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory properties of PG such as inhibition of pulmonary inflammation [11] and prevention of intraperitoneal adhesion under infection [1,3,6]. We therefore predict that medicinal application of PG has many advantages in medical cost-cutting as well as benefits in clinical application in future.…”

“…We have previously demonstrated that polysaccharides isolated from PG inhibit pulmonary inflammation [11] and intraperitoneal adhesion related to intraperitoneal inflammation [1,3,6]. These effects of PG related to anti-inflammatory activities might be beneficial in the treatment of dermal wound healing.…”

“…Phellinus gilvus (PG) is a medicinal mushroom belonging to Hymenochaetaceae basidiomycetes , and has advantages over many Phellinus species due to its short growth period (3 mo), making it cheaper to produce (1)(2)(3). Previous studies in our laboratory and by other investigators have established various biological activities of PG.…”

“…23 Although several manouvers have been alleged to lessen the adhesion formation including the use of anti-inflammatory agents, antioxidants, anticoagulants, fibrinolytics, and mechanical barriers, the golden standard has not been confirmed yet. [24][25][26] MB has been utilized in numerous clinical fields including the management of both cyanide and nitrite poisoning as well as urinary tract infections. 27 It antagonizes the effects of nitric oxide and it also competitively inhibits the reduction of molecular oxygen to superoxide by acting as an electron acceptor for xantine oxidase.…”
