Purpose Canine filariosis in domestic dogs caused by several species of filarids is an emerging vector-borne disease and the spread of this disease remains a global veterinary and public health concern. However, information regarding these filarids and their epidemiological patterns remains scarce in Malaysia. The present study aimed to determine the infection rate and associated risk factors of filarial parasites in dogs in Malaysia. Methods A total of 399 dog blood samples were collected from veterinary hospitals and animal shelters in Malaysia to determine the infection rate and associated risk factors via a combination of microscopic, serologic and molecular diagnostic techniques. Results Two species of canine filariae identified in this study were Dirofilaria immitis (6.5%) and Brugia pahangi (1.3%), and their infections were associated with cross breed, medium size and short hair (p < 0.05). Conclusions A new pair of primers was developed to complement the recovery of the 12S rRNA gene fragment of filarial parasites. This study represents the first molecular evidence of B. pahangi in dogs in Malaysia.

Telah dilakukan penelitian kejadian dermatitis pada anjing dan gambaran histopatologinya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi penyebab dermatitis, dan mengetahui gambaran histopatologi kulit anjing yang menderita dermatitis, serta kejadiannya pada anjing betina dan jantan baik pada anjing lokal maupun ras yang dikandangkan atau tidak dikandangkan. Penelitian dilakukan selama 10 bulan, di Rumah Sakit Hewan Pendidikan Universitas Udayana, dengan jumlah sampel 470 ekor anjing. Identifikasi penyebab dermatitis diambil dari kerokan kulit ditambahkan kalium hidroksida (KOH) 10% diamati dengan mikroskop cahaya perbesaran, sedangkan pemeriksaan histopatologi diambil biopsi kulit anjing dan dibuat sediaan histologi, dengan menggunakan metoda pewarnaan Haematoxilin Eosin. Pengamatan preparat dilakukan dengan mikroskop cahaya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, gambaran histopatologi kulit anjing yang menderita dermatitis ditemukan: infiltrasi sel-sel radang, hiperkeratosis, nekrosis, hiperplasia dan degenerasi hidrofik dan ditemukan segmen tungau Sarcoptes scabiei. Kuman penyebab dermatitis teridentifikasi: Aspergillus, Microsporum canis, M. gypseum, dan Trichophyton rubrum. Dermatitis lebih sering ditemukan pada anjing lokal (56%), anjing dewasa (68%) dan tidak dikandangkan (63%), sedangkan jenis kelamin tidak berpengaruh terhadap kejadian dermatitis. Simpulan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa gambaran histopatologi dermatitis kulit anjing yang disebabkan oleh jamur maupun parasit adalah mirip.

Dirofilariasis is a serious zoonotic disease in dogs. This study aimed to measure the prevalence and determine the risk factors of dirofilariasis in the Sukabumi Regency. A total of 152 blood samples were collected from dogs in two sub-districts in Sukabumi which have different topographic characteristics, namely Jampang Tengan District which is a hilly area, and Cisolok District which is a coastal area. Blood serum was examined using the commercial rapid test kit CHW Ag Test Kit 2.0 ® Bionote to detect the presence of the Dirofilaria immitis adult worm antigen. The results showed that the seroprevalence of dirofilariasis in dogs in the Sukabumi Regency was 20.4%. Areas with hilly characteristics have a higher prevalence of dirofilariasis than coastal areas do. The incidence of dirofilariasis in the Sukabumi Regency was not influenced by sex, method of keeping, or age of the dog.
