Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary infectious agent for the development of cervical cancer, although the presence of the virus alone is insufficient for viral development and proliferation; this can be attributed to the increase in potential oncogenic risk, along with other risk factors. In the present investigation, the prevalence of high-risk HPV was determined from samples of premalignant or malignant cervical cytology in women from the southern region of Ecuador. The kit we used was able to detect genotypes 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, and 59. In addition, 64.5% of the analyzed samples were positive for HPV, with genotypes 16 and 18 being the most prevalent (16 was detected in 148 samples and 18 in 108). Genotypes 58 and 51 were the third most frequent simple and multiple infections, respectively. The data are very similar to those obtained worldwide, suggesting that the strategy of sex education, and the use of vaccines as primary prevention agents, could significantly decrease the incidence and mortality rate of cervical cancer in the southern region of Ecuador.

There are few studies on the circulation of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in indigenous Ecuadorian women. The aim of the study is to determine the circulation of HPV and identify cytological alterations in cervical samples of indigenous Ecuadorian women and to define the behavior of some socio-demographic and clinical-epidemiological variables. An analytical cross-sectional study was done between July 2017 and September 2018 to determine the presence of cytological alterations and HPV infection in 100 indigenous women between 15 and 55 years of age, residing in Cañar, Ecuador. The association between socio-demographic and clinical-epidemiological variables with viral infection was investigated. Was obtained a 98% of negative cytology for malignancy and 2% of cervical lesions. Cases with high-grade lesions were not diagnosed. In general, a 34% (34/100) tested was positive for HPV, predominating oncogenic genotypes. HPV 31 was the most frequent in 41.2% (14/34) of cases followed by HPV 16 in 20.6% (7/34). Women between 20 and 30 years of age were five times more likely to be infected with HPV (44.1%, 15/34). The frequency of infection was significantly higher in single women and in those who reported having 2 to 3 births. Infection with HPV 16 was associated with the use of hormonal contraceptives, in 57.1% (4/7) of the cases; p = 0.005, RP = 12.44 IC95% (2.40-64.62). The high prevalence of oncogenic HPV infection indicates the need to incorporate this indigenous population into early detection programs for cervical cancer.

Objective: this paper aims to perform diagnostic screening of HPV in healthy Ecuadorian mestizo women, from seven provinces, and compare the findings with other Latin American populations. Material and methods: genotyping was done with two different oligonucleotides MY09 and MY11; a fragment of 450 base pairs was amplified, L1 region of the viral genome. Results: it analyzed 555 women, 35 were positive for HPV (6.3%). Genotypes found in relation to oncogenic risk, were 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 42, 45, 51, 52, 53, 58, 59, 61, 81. 12/35 women (34.3%) presented high-risk genotypes. Four positive cases were also observed in women older than 55 years (0.36%). The 14 published studies of Ecuadorian women showed that the most prevalent genotypes are 16, 18, 31, 52, 53, 56 and 58; while in the eight Latin American Studies the most prevalent are 16, 18, 31, 45, 52 and 58. Conclusion: although there are several studies on HPV genotyping on Latin American populations, there is an important gap related to ethnicity and the prevalence of the virus. In addition, most of them have not compared similar and common subtypes in the population. The general prevalence of HPV in the studied population was 6.3%. It found that genotypes 16, 18, 31, 52, 53, 56 and 58 are the most prevalent in Ecuadorian normal mestizo women. Genotypes 53 and 56 are common in Latino populations. Larger studies, in different ethnic groups are needed to identify other prevalent genotypes in certain geographical areas.
