Show more

“…The prevalence of anemia among adolescents found in this study (13.1%) was lower than that obtained in an analysis conducted with children and adolescents aged between 7 and 14 years in the public education network of Salvador, Bahia (24.7%) 23 , and in a study conducted with adolescent girls aged between 10 and 18 years in the education network of Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina (31.1%) 24 . The lowest prevalence (7.3%) was observed in the public elementary schools in the suburbs of Vespasiano, city in Minas Gerais, in which 736 girls aged between 11 and 16 years were assessed 25 .…”

“…The lower iron intake observed among 14 to 18 year olds makes them more vulnerable to anemia due to lack of iron, which is highly prevalent among Brazilian adolescents of both genders. 24 The greater inadequacy of iron observed in females compared to males of the same age, in the second half of adolescence, may be associated with this group's lower intake of the nutrient, as the values of the percentiles are lower than the values for the males, although needs are similar for both groups (7.9 mg for females and 7.7 mg for males).…”

“…This percentage is expected in this population, according to the WHO [18]. This value is far below those found in some regional studies conducted in Brazil [5,7]. In 2004, the prevalence of iron deficiency was found to be 14.5% (37 individuals), of which 64.4% (24) were male, and 35.6% (13) female [9].…”

“…Regional studies have observed that the prevalence of anemia on both sex ranges from 6.4 to 41.7% [3][4][5][6][7][8], in females from 7.5 to 31.1% [4][5][6][7] and males from 6.0 to 31.4% [4][5][6]. The prevalence of iron deficiency on both sexes is 21.2% [3], in females 10.3% and in males 18.6% [9].…”
