Prevalence of radiographic knee osteoarthritis and its association with knee pain in the elderly of Japanese population-based cohorts: The ROAD study

Abstract: The present cross-sectional study revealed a high prevalence of radiographic knee OA in the Japanese elderly. Knee pain was strongly associated with JSN especially in men, while women tended to have knee pain even without radiographic OA.

“…But epidemiological data supports that overall obese persons are more affected in knee OA 27,28,29 . In the present study incidence was more in normal BMI patients which was similar to Muraki S et al 30 Zhang Q et al 31 Vishal AA et al 32 & Radha MS et al 33 Out of 40 patients 22 (55%) patients were having sedentary lifestyle, 9 (22.5%) patients were having average lifestyle and 9 (22.5%) patients were laborers. Eminent Unani physicians have stated that excessive rest and lack of exercise may cause Wajaul-Mafasil 5,8,34 .…”

“…Genetic screen using the human osteoarhritic cartilage UniGene library suggests that HIF-2 is a potential catabolic regulator of articular cartilage (Yang et al, 2010). Based on the Japanese population ROAD study, a functional SNP in human EPAS1 proximal promoter region was associated with knee osteoarthritis in a 397 patient cohort (Muraki et al, 2009;Saito et al, 2010). Consistent with this finding, , HIF-2 expression was markedly increased in OA patients with degenerative cartilage (Saito et al, 2010;Yang et al, 2010).…”

“…Second, this study was performed in a limited local region, which may not be representative of Japan overall. For example in the Research on Osteoarthritis-osteoporosis Against Disability (ROAD) study, living in a mountainous community was a risk factor for knee OA [23,24]. Third, we used the Japanese version of the KSS2011, for which validation work using cultural adaptation methods has not yet been performed.…”
