Prevalence of care dependence among older persons in 26 Latin American and the Caribbean countries

Abstract: Rapid population aging will drive a strong increase in the demand for long-term care services in Latin America and the Caribbean. To inform policy making, in this study we present novel estimates of the number of care dependent older persons in 26 countries of the region. For ten of these countries, estimates are based on existing survey data. For the remaining 16 countries, we use a statistical model to predict the prevalence of care dependence based on the relationship between this condition and age, sex and… Show more

“…Other countries in the region, such as Uruguay, are also facing similar cost pressures to implement LTCS (Matus-Lopez & Cid, 2016). Currently, studies that estimate the demand of care of dependents and make diagnostics of existing programs are being conducted in several countries in the region, including Argentina, Brazil, and Chile (Aranco et al, 2022;Dabove, 2022;Lloyd-Sherlock et al, 2022;Matus-Lopez & Cid, 2015;Villalobos, 2017). In these countries, the challenge of balancing the imperative to develop long-term care systems with the constraints of public financing for social and health services has led to a growing interest in cash transfers as a potential substitute for in-kind services.…”

“…Finally, population aging presents challenges, but also opportunities to drive the silver economy (Okumura et al, 2020, Jimenez et al, 2021. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the number of people over 65 with care dependence is projected to grow from eight million in 2020 to twenty-three million people by 2050 in coming decades (Aranco et al, 2022b). Caregivers' work can be enhanced by using new technologies like telecare to reduce the need for hospital admissions and residential care (Benedetti et al, 2022) and free up resource to focus on those who require more intensive support.…”
