Prevalence of Antibodies to Hepatitis C Virus among Hemodialysis Patients in Damascus, Syria

Abstract: Factors related to infrastructure and operational system might be responsible for the very high prevalence of anti-HCV found in one of the two units. There was no data available on anti-HCV status of transplant recipients prior to transplantation. However, the prevalence among those patients, which is very similar to that of HD patients, suggests that HD may be responsible for such high prevalence among this group. An intensive educational program for staff members and proper evaluation of the HD situation in … Show more

“…We found that younger age, history of transplant and history of past HBV infection were associated with HCV infection (19,30,31). Contrary to reported literature, the time on dialysis in our study was not significantly associated with HCV infection (19,30,(32)(33)(34)(35). No data were available on transfusion history or lifestyle behaviours, including substance abuse, which are known to be risk factors for HCV infection (19,25,30,32,34,35).…”

“…The prevalence of anti-HCV antibody in our study was found to be (41.10%) and ranged from (26.05%) to (62.82%) according to the dialysis center (Table: 1) and ( Figure: 1), these results in accordance with that reported by others (Khalaf et al, 1996;Mohammed, 1997;Othman and Monem, 2001;and Al-Shohaib et al, 2003). HCV prevalence in haemodialysis patients is highly variable between different countries and between different centers in the same locality (Devesa et al, 1997).…”

“…Recent data from Indonesia, Syria, and Jordan revealed rates of 63.4%, 48.9% and 34.6%, respectively (Othman & Monem 2001, Bdour 2002, Chanpong et al 2002. In Brazil, anti-HCV prevalence ranges from 20.3% to 64.7% (Vanderborght et al 1995, Carneiro et al 2001, Santana et al 2001, Busek et al 2002.…”
