Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship of masculine eating/drinking beliefs on male consumers’ concern with unhealthy eating/drinking habits and, in turn, with binge drinking. Additionally, this research tests if and how a change in these beliefs influences binge drinking intention and intention to eat unhealthy food. Design/methodology/approach Three studies were conducted in Bogotá (Colombian males; convenience sampling). The purpose of Study 1 (N = 209) was to develop a scale to measure masculine eating/drinking beliefs. Study 2 (N = 191) tested the mediating role of concern with unhealthy eating/drinking habits in the relationship of masculine eating/drinking beliefs with binge drinking. Study 3 (N = 179) was an experimental study, which examined the effect of information about some negative consequences of masculine beliefs on the answers to the masculine eating/drinking beliefs inventory and, in turn, on binge drinking intention and intention to eat unhealthy food. Findings A one-dimensional (eight-items) scale was developed and validated. The results of this paper show that masculine eating/drinking beliefs are associated with lower concern with unhealthy eating/drinking and, in turn, with higher binge drinking. Information that influences these beliefs leads to lower binge drinking and unhealthy food ingestion intentions. Research limitations/implications This research presents the first scale that measures masculine eating/drinking beliefs. It provides initial evidence on how an intervention focused on the negative consequences of sexism can influence these beliefs, affecting binge drinking and overeating intentions. Practical implications This research provides new findings on a topic associated with several health problems in many countries, including the effect on consumers’ weight gaining and related illnesses. Originality/value This research presents the first scale that measures masculine eating/drinking beliefs. It provides initial evidence about factors (through mediating variables) that link masculine eating/drinking beliefs with some unhealthy eating/drinking habits. In addition, the results show how information about some negative consequences of these beliefs can influence consumers’ binge drinking and unhealthy food ingestion intentions, which leads to key recommendations for future interventions. As a result, this research provides new findings on a topic associated with several health problems in many countries, including the effect on consumers’ weight gaining and related illnesses.

Para alguns povos indígenas da América Latina, o uso de bebidas alcoólicas é anterior à chegada dos colonizadores. Para outros, os contatos interétnicos ao longo da história alteraram profundamente os sentidos e as relações com essas substâncias. O presente artigo revisa a literatura dos últimos anos sobre o consumo de álcool por povos indígenas latino-americanos, compreendendo aspectos históricos, sociais e de saúde a ele associados. Os resultados indicam que o uso precoce de bebidas alcóolicas, a perda de referenciais identitários, mudanças nos modos de vida, proximidade com centros urbanos, êxodo migratório, marginalização e discriminação social são fatores de risco ao consumo prejudicial de álcool entre povos indígenas. Constatou-se ainda uma carência de pesquisas epidemiológicas que prejudicam o dimensionamento de demandas relativas ao uso prejudicial de álcool e dificultam o planejamento e execução dos serviços de saúde.

Introducción: el consumo de cigarrillo da cuenta de un número importante de muertes anualmente. No obstante, el consumo diario de cigarrillo es frecuente en estudiantes de Medicina de Colombia y poco se conoce sobre las variables asociadas en esta población.Objetivo: conocer algunas variables asociadas al consumo diario de cigarrillo en estudiantes de Medicina de una universidad de Bogotá-Colombia, en el año 2010.Materiales y métodos: se llevó a cabo un estudio analítico observacional transversal en el que participaron estudiantes de Medicina mayores de 18 años. Se cuantificaron variables demográficas, rendimiento académico, consumo problemático de alcohol (CPA) (Cuestionario AUDIT), síntomas ansiosos y depresivos (SAD) (Cuestionario deSalud Personal), estrés percibido (Escala de Estrés Percibido-10), riesgo de trastorno del comportamiento alimentario (RTCA) (Cuestionario SCOFF) y consumo diario de cigarrillo durante el último mes.Resultados: participó un total de 275 estudiantes (media para la edad de 21.7 años; DE=2.8), 62.5% mujeres. Se observó que 82 estudiantes (28.4%) informaron rendimiento académico insatisfactorio; 86 (29.8%), CPA; 47 (16.3%), SAD; 23 (8.0%), alto estrés percibido; 59 (20.4%), RTCA; y 35 (12.1%), consumo diario de cigarrillo durante el último mes. Edad mayor de 20 años (OR=3.13; IC95% 1.33-7.41; p=0.007)se asoció a consumo diario de cigarrillo durante el último mes.Conclusión: el consumo diario de cigarrillo es frecuente en estudiantes de Medicina de una universidad de Bogotá-Colombia. El consumo es elevado en los estudiantes mayores de 20 años. Se necesita promover el abandono del consumo de cigarrillo en esta población. Rev.cienc.biomed. 2016;7(1):18-24.
