Prevalence and risk factors for peri-implant diseases in Japanese adult dental patients

Abstract: We investigated the prevalences and risk factors for peri-implant diseases in Japanese adult dental patients attending a follow-up visit at dental hospitals or clinics as part of their maintenance program. This cross-sectional multicenter study enrolled patients with dental implants who attended regular check-ups as part of a periodontal maintenance program during the period from October 2012 through September 2013. Patients with implants with at least 3 years of loading time were included in the study. The co… Show more

“…The most logical explanation for this is poor oral hygiene. Studies have shown that poor oral hygiene is a classical risk factor of periodontitis as well as peri‐implantitis . In the present study nearly 72% individuals in group‐2 reported to brush their teeth once daily and none of the individuals in either group reported to have ever used a dental floss.…”

“…26 Studies have shown that poor oral hygiene is a classical risk factor of periodontitis 34,35 as well as peri-implantitis. 36,37 In the present study nearly 72% individuals in group-2 reported to brush their teeth once daily and none of the individuals in either group reported to have ever used a dental floss. Studies 38,39 have reported that a poor plaque control is associated with an increased frequency of pathogenic microbes (such as Prevotella intermedia, Treponema denticola, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans) that have been associated with the etiology of periodontitis as well as peri-implantitis.…”

“…‒ These risk‐factors have also been shown to increase the risk of peri‐implant diseases . ‒ In the present study, tobacco smokers and individuals with systemic conditions other than chronic hyperglycemia were excluded to minimize the risk of bias in the reported results. However, it was difficult to set poor oral hygiene as an exclusion criterion; otherwise, it would be difficult to identify patients with peri‐implantitis and collect subgingival OB samples.…”

“…while a thick peri-implant phenotype and use of prosthesis for more than 6 years were associated with worsening of BoP. Ogata et al 29 suggested that, in addition to poor oral hygiene, patients with a history of periodontitis are considered at high risk for the development of peri-implant diseases. They also suggested that an adequate control of the dental biofilm and adherence to peri-implant support therapy are extremely important for the maintenance of peri-implant health.…”
