Prevalence and factors associated with antenatal care utilization in Ethiopia: an evidence from demographic health survey 2016

Abstract: Background Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan African country with high maternal mortality ratio (MMR). According to Ethiopian demographic health survey (EDHS) 2016 report, MMR is 420 among 100,000 live births. Antenatal care utilization is a key intervention to reduce these deaths through problem detection and treatment, promotion of health seeking behavior, and preparing pregnant women for birth. Therefore, this study aimed to assess prevalence and factors associated with antenatal care servi… Show more

“…The multilevel mixed-effects analyses were used to account for clustering. This study differed from previous conducted in Ethiopia [32][33][34][35][36][37] that it considered intra-regional/cluster correlation and used multilevel mixed effects analysis adjusting the inconsistent regression coe cient and its estimated standard errors for intra-cluster correlation. The study found an overall 62% of the mothers had received at least one ANC visit, 36.3% received at least four visits, and 3.6% received at least eight ANC from skilled providers respectively.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, while numerous studies concentrating on determinants of antenatal care use in Ethiopia have been published [32][33][34][35][36][37] they didn't provide the quality of the services used considering the number of ANC visits received according to the latest WHO recommendations, contents of ANC received, and timing of ANC visits. Thus, this study attempted to assess which risk factors are signi cantly associated with the number of antenatal care visits, the number contents of ANC received and the timing of ANC visits for the recent pregnancy or live birth among women in Ethiopia preceding the survey considering the regional variation (region-speci c random effects).…”

“…2,[8][9][10] Place of residence, region, mothers' education level, household wealth index, desire for pregnancy, frequency of reading newspaper, frequency of listening to the radio, and frequency of watching TV was associated with the utilization of a minimum of four ANC services. 11,12 Unlike other parts of the world, there is no available data about the level of at least 4 ANC utilization and related factors in our study area. Therefore; this study was aimed to determine the level and factors associated with the utilization of a minimum of four antenatal care services in Debre Berhan town in 2020.…”

“…In Ethiopia, ANC service utilization has improved, but many women still give birth at home without considering such services [11][12][13]. A recent study in Ethiopia shows the prevalence of ANC utilization to be 62.8% [14]. Another research also shows that only 6% of Ethiopian women make their first ANC visit within 16 weeks after gestation [15].…”
