Pretreatment of albino rats with aqueous leaf extract of Ziziphus mauritiana protects against alcohol-induced liver damage

Abstract: Purpose: The effect of the aqueous extract of Ziziphus mauritiana leaf on hepatic lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione and total antioxidant status was studied in chronic alcohol-induced liver damage.Method: Alcohol-induced liver toxicity was created by oral administration of 40% alcohol solution (v/v, 1ml/100g)

“…The cell homogenate then was centrifuged at 3000× g for 10 min at 4 o C (Remi Industries Ltd, Remi Laboratory Instruments, Cooling Centrifuge, C-24 BL is low volume high speed model in table top design) to remove debris and nuclei. The supernatant which consists of cytosolic and mitochondrial fractions was stored at -80 o C. They were used for determination of MDA, 9 SOD, 10 and CAT 11 activities using UV Visible spectrophotometer, Model Lambda 35, Manufactured by Perkin Elmer Inc. USA.…”

“…All parts of this are effective against different types of diseases. Also its leaves are useful in the treatment of diarrhea, wounds, abscesses, swelling and gonorrhea and are reported to have antioxidant activity (Morton, 1987;Dahiru and Obidoa, 2007). The leaf extract of this plant is known to possess anti ulcer activity (Ganachari and Shiv, 2004), antimicrobial activity (Sivasankari and Sankaravadivoo, 2015) and antibacterial activity (Chowdary and Padashetty, 2000).…”

“…However, it does not reveal that which part of the fruit (pulp or seed) possesses the bioactivity. The leaf extract of plant is known to possess antiulcer activity , antibacterial activity (Chowdary and Padashetty, 2000), antioxidant activity (Dahiru and Obidoa, 2007), stimulate phagocytic function and intracellular killing potency of human neutrophils . Bark has been reported to exhibit anticancer properties (Pisha et al, 1995;Ramadoss et al, 2000).…”
