Preterm premature rupture of the fetal membranes: association with sociodemographic factors and maternal genitourinary infections

Abstract: the outcome was more common in puerperal women with lower level of schooling, lower socioeconomic status, older, and smokers, as well as those with a history of threatened miscarriage and premature labor. These factors should be considered in the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy approach.

“…[21] The presence of chorioamnionitis increased maternal unfavorable outcome by 11.6 times as compared to the non presence of chorioamnionitis (AOR=16.6, 95%CI 2.8-99.4) in the Sagameshwar Hospital, India (AOR=3.0, 95%CI 1.2-7.0). [15,20] The difference was due to the longer latency period that aggravated the chance of infection.…”

“…[13,14] The complication risk of PROM is increased if the mother has previous PROM, low body mass index, concomitant infection of the gestational tissues, and longer the time elapsed between the rupture and delivery. [15] Diagnosis and proper management is very important to limit various fetal and maternal complications generally due to infection. However, in countries like Ethiopia where health facilities not well organized with necessary manpower, a large number of mothers come to the facilities late.…”

“…The prevalence preterm premature rupture of membrane was found to be 13.7% with [95% CI=10.6-17.2]. This finding was higher than the study finding from Rio Grande, in Brazil (3.1%) (14), Cork University Maternity Hospital in Ireland (0.1%) (15), and Canada(2.3%) (16). This discrepancy might be due to the difference between the quality of services they provided and socio-economic status of study participants.…”

“…However; previous studies indicated that multifactorial etiology such as socio-demographic, obstetric, medical and behavioral factors are responsible for the occurrence of PPROM. Some of those factors are maternal ethnic origin, previous adverse pregnancy outcome, uterine over distention, smoking, low body mass index, genitourinary tract infection, maternal depression, pre-pregnancy stress, poor diet, assisted fertility, and periodontal disease are the major contributing factors for preterm PROM (1,(4)(5)(6).…”

“…Socio-economic conditions are identified as an influencing factor of premature rupture of membranes. Although the exact causes of PROM are not clearly find yet, the decrease in antibacterial activity in amniotic fluid in low socioeconomic groups is possible to be one of the PROM causes (Hackenhaar, Albernaz, & da Fonseca, 2014). wine-red amniotic fluid means the placenta has been damaged, and amniotic fluid mixed with meconium can be used to describe the incidence of prolonged labour or the breech presentation (Durham & Chapman, 2014).…”
