ResumoO estudo analisa as propriedades psicométricas da versão Portuguesa do Inventário de Atividades para Crianças -Revisto (ICA-R), numa amostra de crianças (N=228) do 4º ano de escolaridade. Os dados são examinados no modelo de Holland, de acordo com premissas desenvolvimentistas e sociocognitivas que salientam fatores sociais e escolares na formação do autoconceito. A análise em componentes principais revela uma estrutura dos interesses e das crenças de capacidade consistente com o modelo de Holland e com atribuições de género e preferências escolares. O conjunto dos dados indica que a versão portuguesa do ICA-R é metrologicamente precisa e válida, e aponta dados positivos para a validade intercultural da medida e do modelo de Holland. As potencialidades do ICA-R são discutidas na investigação sobre o processo de formação do autoconceito e na intervenção educacional de carreira. Palavras-chave: interesses, competências, autoconceito, género, experiências escolares AbstractThis study analyzes the psychometric properties of the Inventory of Children's Activities -Revised (ICA-R), in a sample of 4th grade children (N=228). Data are examined base upon Holland's Personality Type Model, according to developmental and socio-cognitive assumptions that emphasize social and academic factors in the formation of self-concept. Principal component analysis reveals a structure of interests and competence perceptions consistent with the Holland's model, as well as with gender attributions and school preferences. The data set indicates that the Portuguese version of ICA-R is metrologically accurate and valid, and points out the intercultural validity of the measure and of Holland's model. The potential of the ICA-R is discussed in the context of research on the process of self-concept formation and career educational intervention.

Background Choosing a field of specialization within the nursing profession is affected by nurses’ personality traits, self-confidence in performing clinical skills, and the field’s prestige. A successful choice of area of expertise may improve nurses’ job satisfaction and reduce job mobility. This study aims to examine the relationship between personality traits, clinical self-efficacy, perceived prestige, adoption of technological changes, and choice of specialty field among nursing students. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. One-hundred-twenty-seven undergraduate nursing students in their fourth year of studies at a large university in Israel participated in the study. The questionnaire administered was comprised of six parts: demographic data, personality traits, adoption of technological changes, clinical self-efficacy, perceived prestige, and intention to select a field of specialization. Results Acute disciplines were rated more prestigious than chronic disciplines, with intensive care and emergency medicine considered the most prestigious, while mental health and geriatrics were the least prestigious. Students’ mean perceived confidence in performing nursing clinical skills was high and more than half considered themselves open to technology changes. Positive correlations were found between prestige and intention to choose a field of expertise (r = 0.41, p < 0.001) and the personality trait of openness and the intention to choose an acute care area (r = 0.26, p < 0.01). Conclusions Despite the gradual aging of the population and the increase in chronic morbidity, which demand a greater nursing focus on older adults, and notwithstanding the mental health reforms, nursing students perceive geriatrics and mental health as less prestigious fields. A career development path can be applied by developing a tool for occupational guidance designed to rank students’ suitability for specialty fields and thus help them choose the area that best suits them.

A Systematic Career Advising Model and Strategies for Medical Students

One of the important roles of medical schools is to support medical students in deciding upon their future career path or choosing their specialty. The purpose of this study is to suggest a career advising model and strategies for medical students through a systematic approach. This study consists of three parts. The first part introduces some main career theories: super’s career development theory, career decision-making theory, social cognitive career theory, and ecosystem theory. The second part proposes a systematic career advising model using the results acquired from previous studies and theories. This model considers a medical school as a social system that consists of two domains (internal and external). This social system is considered as a complex where various factors interact with each other: students’ individual characteristics, institutional policies and culture, curriculum and learning experience, students’ perceived specialty characteristics, and aspects of the external environment such as healthcare systems. The third part suggests some career advising strategies based on a systematic approach that medical schools can apply. These research results can be used for designing career advising courses for medical students, integrating various career advising programs and resources of medical schools, and evaluating the outcomes of career advising programs at an institutional level.
