Preparation of Polydimethylsiloxane-Modified Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings for Marine Applications

Abstract: A series of waterborne polyurethane dispersions (WPUs) modified with hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were prepared by incorporating PDMS into the soft segments of polyurethane chains. The structural characteristics of the prepared samples were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and particle size analysis (PSA). The effect of PDMS content on the thermal and mechanical properties of PDMS-modified waterborne … Show more

“…Therefore, polysiloxane-based polyurethane materials have great development and application prospects. These modified materials can overcome the poor mechanical properties of polysiloxanes, rendering them applicable to textiles [ 38 ], medical materials [ 39 , 40 , 41 ], adhesives [ 42 ], and coatings [ 43 , 44 , 45 ], among others. Compared with aromatic isocyanates [ 46 ], aliphatic 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (HMDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) are ideal materials for synthesizing aliphatic polyurethanes for biomedical applications, owing to their nontoxicity and yellowing resistance [ 47 , 48 , 49 ].…”

“…Moreover, the signals around 532.6 and 533.4 eV are due to C-O and Si-O-C, respectively [ 21 ]. The intensity of the Si-O-C bond increases more in Si-Cot_Dip/O 2 sample than that in the Si-Cot_Plasma/O 2 sample [ 40 , 41 ].…”

“…Generally, the hydrophobic PDMS chains grafted on the PU polymers typically were curled inside the latex particles after WPU-g-PDMS x dispersed in water, while the hydrophilic groups (neutralized carboxyl groups from the chain extender of DMPA) wrapped around the latex particles. 44 The degree of microphase separation of the latex particles grew as the amount of PDMS increased, which caused an increase in free volume 45 and, ultimately, a bigger particle size. Furthermore, the latex color and particle size are connected.…”
